Fuck, I love tea, of all sorts, and drink it all day 'erry day, but we don't need constant tea threads every day. Once a week would suffice.

Can I get some oolong recs?

The tea shop I normally use charges overseas shipping, so I don't want to go through them for one bag of oolong until I need to replenish all my tea.

What are some solid oolong teas I can get shipped domestically in the US? I'll be in Western Mass this weekend, so I might check out Tea Trekker or TeaGuys. Most of the oolong I've seen is a bit pricey, so I don't want to buy underwhelming stuff.

Actually, I browsed the tea section at a local Asian market, but all the tea was so cheap, I figured it was mediocre quality at best. It's mostly bagged too. Then of course some of it is illegible.
>>
>>7341843
In my experience the more illegible and chinese the package is, it has better quality.

THAT sounds like a good plan/ That, I could get into. I'll start one Saturday morning. Although, I'd be behind everyone since I'm US Pacific Standard Time. Maybe someone else, who's earlier, should start it.
And frankly, we should just make it a Comfy Beverage thread, that includes teas, hot chocolate, coffee, and even hot cider, if someone were so inclined.

Does anybody here drink some tropical teas?

I started drinking Guayusa (tea from Amazon) because I live in South America atm and it's very cheap. It tastes pretty good, similar to green tea.

After some research I found out that apparently it's super caffeine heavy (as much as coffee) and has more anti-oxidants than green tea.

I guess I'll try to replace my coffee with this tea.
>>
>>7343073
With amazon I meant the amazon forest, not the retailer.

This actually depends on the flavour you are looking for. If you want something fruity? Floral? Fruity, I suggest the Bai Hao from taiwan. It's traditional and has a sweet, honeyed fruit taste. The aroma reminds me of apricots. Floral, I'd suggest the darker Zhi Lan Xiang from China. The aroma is similar to orchids.
>>
>>7343020
I think it tastes really mushroomy. I usually mix it with other black teas to deepen the flavor.

Literally not sweet at all.

I just recently got into proper, non-shit/bagged tea, starting with green.

Hoooooh boy I'm never going back. I look forward to drinking this stuff every day. Started off with o-cha's Sencha Kaoru and Matcha Kiku Mukashi. Absolutely delicious.

Does anyone know any good online shops for teas other than green?
>>
>>7344794
I just realized Matcha can be prepared with cold water (yeah I'm stupid) and I think I was brewing it at the wrong temperature before. Shit's cash.
>>
>>7342516
Sencha is the fucking best, though.
>>7342857
Teabags mean the leaf can't unfurl properly, you don't get as much flavour. I have a few bagged teas but I only really drink them when I'm sick, for convenience.
Loose leaf is pretty cheap where I am, about the same price as teabags. Get something from a brand you like, use a decently sized teapot, and go from there.
>>
>>7343073
Mate might be an idea.I know they have it in Brazil and I think Argentina, it shouldn't be hard to find. I love it, it's delicious.
>>
>>7344768
I've been wanting to try them out but I can get similar teas from so many other places for so much cheaper. How's their own blend? It's really the only one I'd consider buying, because you can't really get it anywhere else.
>>
>>7345942
>Teabags mean the leaf can't unfurl properly

Teabags don't even have leaves in them, they've got "dust and fannings"
i.e. the shit they sweep off the floor in the processing plant.

strange. They have a lot of fruity and dessert teas to which I am unused. The lighting and organization of the place scare me as well. One just opened up not too far from the local asian teahouse. I still go to the latter, but I'm hoping the competition drives down prices.

So, I'm gradually switching from coffee to tea. And I'm also gradually switching from tea bags to loose tea. If regular tea is like delicious 70% cocoa chocolate, then David's Tea stuff is like a candy bar. The quality isn't as great, sure, and there's artificial flavouring from time to time. It can also be a tad overpriced. But I do enjoy both. Whatever I can, I get at a local shop but I buy from David's tea as well. Hard Candy is my favourite from them. I dont think so. There is only one human race and we still made jokes about black people.

What i mean to say is there are two main variants of the plant: chinese and assam variant. (and, obviously, shitton of hybrids, and specific cultivars cultivated for particular atributes.) and Darjeelings use chinese variant.
>>
>>7351185
Variants are the same species with differences so minor that botanists will debate whether they even exist.
In this case the only difference is var. assam might tend to grow slightly bigger.

The reason Darjeeling seems more Chinese than usual is because it's processed like an oolong.

Hey guys, it's >>7347529 again, I got my teas and I wanted to post some pics. Here's my shot of everything together. So far I've tried the jasmin phoenix pearls, white tangerine, and pu erh dante.

I initially liked the jasmine phoenix pearls just because of the way they looked. The jasmine flowers unfurl nicely in the water. But the tea was independently delicious, subtle, and nice to drink - if a little overly jasmine-y. Brewed at 180 degrees for about 4 minutes, but I think I'd brew shorter next time, it was a little astringent toward the end.

Here's a picture of the jasmine being brewed. I was trying to get a good shot of the flower, but it started to break apart when I nudged it around.

About the other teas: Flavorwise, the Pu erh Dante was definitely my favorite. So complex, earthy and deep. It kinds of reminds me of that musty smell of an old church. Maybe not everybody likes that smell now that I think of it. I gave it to my SO who thought it tasted like old hay, but I guess it's not for everybody

Finally the white tangerine was my least favorite. Tasted a little bitter like tangerine rind, and that flavor overpowered the really subtle white tea. Maybe I need to refine my tastes some more?
>>
>>7351803

I'm having to go through an effort to find a comparable jasmine green or red tea.

My previous employer's mother brought over jasmine red tea from China, and from then on out I was hooked. Green and white too.

When my cousin went to China to visit relatives of her husband, she brought back pic related. Unfortunately it was from a bulk open air market in Beijing, near a bulk silk stand. I've been looking for this tin's brand, but it turns out they just put tea into the decorative tin.

I really want more.

Weird… My jasmine pearls don't have any flower in it. They're supposed to be removed before rolling the tea. (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aYAAhrHk5tM) And it's just two very young leaves on a stem, not older leaves like yours.
Is there a difference between jasmine pearls and jasmine phoenix pearls, maybe?
Also does anyone know how to make jasmine pearls in gong fu cha style? It takes way too long for the pearls to open up and the tea is then over brewed…
>>
>>7352422
>looking for brand
You're doing it wrong. The best tea are very traditional and don't have a "brand".

The only brand to look for is the western company that choose these tea and import them.

If you're looking for a great jasmine tea, look for silver needle jasmine (white tea), or jasmine pearl (green tea). I don't know any red tea with jasmine but it could exist since pu-erh jasmine exists: http://www.teavivre.com/jasmine-mini-raw-tuocha/

You can find a shop recommendation list on reddit /r/tea, I personally use teavivre and palaisdesthes and I'm very satisfied with them.
>>
How come the most common teabag brands give completely different brewing instructions to that of the consensus, for white and green teas?

for example, most guides would never recommend going over 95 Celsius for either but I commonly see the big brands recommend full boil, or similarly "let cool for a minute" (which is pretty uneventful temps wise).

Damn though, the CPK-17 is going for ~$100 now, what the hell? If it was that pricey when I was deciding I may have just taken a small leap of faith and gone with the Ivation.

Probably isn't much of a leap, how do you fuck up a kettle anyways? Looks like all they did was reverse engineer the CPK-17 so it should be fine.

If you want more precise control the Bonavita var temp kettle is popular. I decided against it because I wanted as brainless a solution as possible.

Don't buy anything pricey from verdant, there's a shit ton of drama right now about how they lie about their tea. If you're getting the cheap stuff it doesn't matter but if you're going to spend lots of money spend it somewhere better

Get a motherfucking BUBBA and strain yo shit yourself
>>

Yeah I only get cheap stuff and only when they are on sale. I did notice that on my last order most of the tea leaves were broken into really small pieces, I thought that was from shipping because past orders were good but maybe they started selling lower grade tea. Got any recommendations for stores with wide variety? I got these guys near me but while their quality is pretty good, their selection is pretty limited.

See the reddit list, there is plenty of very good tea shop. More that you can even try.

>>7370356
yes. the basics sample was excellent but it did take a month to arrive.

I somehow managed to get the verdant from reddit list in the past so I wanted to bring someone else into the loop :D. Checked these sites and looks like I've been shafted pretty badly even with the cheaper teas. Thanks Anon!

Long story short, they claimed some very impossible things and heavily overcharged on all sorts of tea. Just google verdant controversy, this doesn't appear to be their first offense.

should i?

Dude yes, the basics are definitely worth it.
>>
Anyone got experience from the British site chinalife? Seems legit and they have a physical tea bar/store in London.
>>
>>7371122
Their products are fairly decent to good, the only problem I have with them is how they shove the 'benefits' of tea in your face and their health... let's just say "propaganda". Other than that, you should check out some of their samples as they have a good price to quality ratio.
>>
>>7371135
Alright, will probably buy their matcha and all their samples to begin with.

Yeah, we really need to set up a /ck/-approved list.

What's a good kettle?
>>
>>7371725
Read the thread, we've talked about kettle already.
>>
>>7371730
Not conclusively.

Are adjustable temps really worthwhile? Seems because it is so specialist there isn't much competition to drive the prices down.
>>

>>7371894
electric kettles with the variable-temperature feature: they are rarely accurate. I won't say "don't bother," as some people still like them, but be aware that if you are trying to hit a more exact temperature, a fixed-temp kettle and a standard meat thermometer will do a much better job.
>>
>>7371894
For the money you spend on an adjustable kettle, you could get a hot water pot just like in your japanese animes
>>

a lot of bagged fruit tea mixes come with rosehip as base, then other things added in.

it's okay when mixed, kind of mellow when alone

I never saw any tea enthusiast using anything else other than an electric kettle and 95% it is one with temperature control.

I think we could make one, I've been into tea in-depth for a few years now and I see other people in the threat who know as much or more than me pretty often. We could nominate vendors and if anyone has a reason they shouldn't be listed they give it, and if the reason is good, they're taken off the list.

When it comes to green and white tea, Palais Des Thes and Ippodo are my go to's
