I don't remember what it's like to not be able to cook well. I live with three other people who can't cook and don't bother trying.

I've realized that there's so much basic knowledge to learn before you start getting good. Things like:

>How much water to put in rice
>Don't add salt to already salty foods e.g. soy sauce, cheese, bacon
>How long to cook a potato
>Avoid using multiple types of starches/carbohydrates in a meal
>Knowing what herbs and spices to use in different situations

Then again, there's also recipes which baby-step people through the process. So I don't think it's too hard, maybe people these days are just lazy.

Is it wrong that I take my cooking ability for granted?

nope, everyone should be able to cook if they even spend 15 mins learning.
it's just following the fucking recipe.
if you can't follow simple directions you failed at life
>>
It's definitely not something to be taken for granted, especially in the age of increasingly well designed prepackaged, ready-to-eat meals and fast food chains.
Most people now will get into their 30's and realize "shit we need to cook sometimes" and will end up eating burnt to shit, awful slop you'd expect from a 1950's housewife that never learned to cook because she was running the factories during WW2

it's a technique where you put things (usually meat) in a water bath kept at a specific temperature. The idea being as the system approaches equilibrium your food will be that temp exactly

with a gas range and some good thermometers you don't even have to buy anything. Your autism should be enough to keep the temp stable

Rice and beans is all you need. I laugh at people who say "woe is me, I can only afford to eat rice and beans". It's the best food possible. You should think yourself lucky that the perfect food is so affordable.

I've been having a bad month economically, so I've been eating a whole lot of bread. Really a lot.
I have no fruit. The most greenish foods I have are onions and potatoes. And for the sweets just oatmeal.
Any low budget recipe on oatmeal to make with milk or something? Same thing on onions, besides caramelizing them and putting them on top of baked potatoes.
Figured maybe you guys would have a few ideas.

Can you afford things like eggs and cheese?

Is there a dollar store where you live and how tight is your budget?
>>
>>9052018
Not right now. If I make some more money I could buy some. I'm saving two eggs for a father's day cake so.
Right now I have money only for transport. I have enough flour and pasta and stuff to last the month, which is why I've been making bread this whole time. But it gets old fast.
>>
>>9052030
if you can, rice and beans make a complete protein and are extremely cheap/easy to make. lentils don't require soaking, and you can make both in a single pot.

you can add oatmeal in with your bread perhaps to vary it. you can also make pasta out of flour.

when you do get money, buy the seasons. google what's in season, it'll be cheaper.

best of luck

Ok, is it just me or have onions changed lately? Like a month ago I was making some guacamole and I added onion, but then the onions completely overpowered everything in it. Ruined my guacamole. I thought maybe i was just using some old ass half cut onions i found in my fridge, but a few days later mi madre was cutting up some fresh onions for some tacos, and I could smell them from across the room. And these were the white onions so they normally aren't that strong. Now I know what you're thinking. This dude just a bitch about onions, but the fact that i have eaten full raw onions before means it's might not just be me. Maybe some gmo company is working on shifting the standard kind of onion that the public uses. Maybe the onion farms had a weird season. Idk, but has anyone else noticed onions being particularly pungent lately? I was trying to eat a salad today, and I was like woah, that's some onion. But it was a red onion, so it actually is normally pretty strong. Anyway, it could just be a mental thing where I had one bad onion, and the memory just gets triggered. But all in all, I'm just checking if I'm tripping or not. Nah mean?

I had some strong onion in a salad a few weeks ago so maybe this is a thing now.
>>
I haven't noticed this, but I'd guess that onion flavor varies with the seasons. Try getting smaller (younger) onions, or maybe go for organic non-GMO varieties
>>
look up "quick pickling", or just soak them in ice water for 10 minutes. Both help to cut the intensity.
