This thread is about depression-tier cheap food. Food that gets the job done and nothing more.

I'll start with hardtack and broth. I twice-baked dough with a 3:1 flour:water and some salt. It's eatable after soaking in liquid for 15 minutes.

Luxury food fit for a king. My grandparents had it real hard, they survived on nothing but dirt, sawdust, and a single coffee bean from 1928 to 1934.

Looks like your typical fair food, nothing particularly over the top. I'd murder a pork belly burger and a tipsy pie.

What meal would you cook to impress a girl?

Depends on the girl. Don't go in blind, try and find a match between her preferences and what you are really good at.
>>
>>9072730
If she's a nocook, stir fry or steak dinner. People who don't cook will be impressed by this even if you fuck up a little. If she cooks, eggplant Parmesan or carbonara.

It's the beginning of my weekend. Boss asked if I could come in today, but I made up an excuse about having Father's Day obligations. Been drinking vodka since I woke up, alone. Making some rice, which I'm going to top with Spam and eggs.

Then planning on running to the liquor store for beer and more vodka, maybe pick up some Vietnamese on the way back.

Have an alcohol related ultrasound appointment at 9 tomorrow morning, and need to do a 12 hour fast. Not sure if I'll be able to get any sleep if I stop drinking at 9pm.

I can't eat meat anymore. I feel sick after it and also pretty guilty. I can still eat fish but I can't force myself to eat eat red/white meat. Who else here is experiencing a personal crisis?

If you cant eat meat because you feel "pretty guilty" why is fish okay?
>>
>>9079646

Fish do not feel pain because they don't have the neuro capacity. Even when you catch them on a sharp hook they don't feel it. And they taste better anyway.
>>
>>9079659
>Fish do not feel pain because they don't have the neuro capacity.

That's not only a myth but a complete misunderstanding of fish physiology. While they don't feel "pain" in the same way that we do, their equivalent sensation would be "stress". They feel rising danger and anxiety, usually in a cascade when caught or butchered. They feel panic as well.

This "fish don't feel pain" meme is a lie pescatarians tell themselves because they are too pussy to either eat meat or go vegetarian. Fish don't feel the same type of pain we do, but they still feel their own version of "pain".

Basically everything is bad for you

I disagree. People should listen to their body and eat what it craves. That's how you reach 100 years.
>>
>>9079562
That works if you're already eating a good diet without a ton of processed junk food. People who are currently drinking a lot of soda will crave soda when thirsty, and think water or anything else tastes bad, except maybe juice which has just as much sugar.
>>
It really is. Almost every food you can find reasons that it should be avoided. Just use common sense plus exercise and you're fine. Count calories, eat whole plant foods, count protein if you want to lift, and avoid processed garbage in general.

A very common theme I see when discussing health is missing the forest for the trees. People get to obsessed with minute detail, or even just one specific food asking "is this good or bad". They need to be looking over the entire diet. The truth is, most foods are okay within the context of an overall healthy diet.

>>

nothing, probably makes it taste good and thickens without all the fat of heavy cream. Made it the other night with egg yolk half and half and chicken stock with garlic and parm and pepper. It was chef johns recipe and turned out pretty good. Cream cheese would add a more creamy mouthfeel that you get from pure cream.

Need some help, /ck/. A couple friends and I are going to the beach this weekend. Not the one in the picture, mind you, another one. Anyway, they say that they have the food handled, but they want me to bake something for the occasion. Do you guys have any suggestion? Some cookie, brownie, or cake that would go well with the beach? I was thinking of something tropical like pineapple cookie or some shit, but I'd like more ideas.

I like a layer or two of ricotta and finely chopped basil mixture in there. The best lasagna always seems to have it.

How could it possibly be lasagna without lasagna in it? Do you make chicken soup with beef as the meat too?

Alright /ck/ I need your help for inspiration.

I invited my new boss and a few high ranking managers of my firm to a dinner at my place. He's a gourmet and a wine amateur and after a few tastings in restaurants he suggested I throw something.
Goal is to score a few points and have a nice dinner.

It will be a Mexican fusion theme, and I'm a bit stuck on the dessert.
The goal is to use traditional ingredients of Mexican cuisine and revisit them in an uncommon form, while conserving the typical mix of savours.

I make a pretty solid corn Ice cream and I thought that it would be an interesting starting point.

To go with the ice cream I was thinking a red fruit marmelade or chutney is always a nice touch. So why not a braised tomato puree. It is a fruit after all and slow cooked it gets rather sweet and caramelized. Acidic touch would be nice with the cream.

But I've never cooked tomato as a dessert apart from a tomato ice cream once.

What do you think?

I believe the dish needs something spicy too, so I was thinking about making some dark chocolate decoration and make them.with a chili infused chocolate.

I'll have to make several trials to get the flavour and spiciness right but it definitely has visual potential
Do you believe it'll taste good with corn ice cream?

Pic related, a raspberry/grapefruit bavarois I made some time ago.

Another option is a Chamoy sauce on the ice cream wich is both sour and spicy and could replace both tomato puree and chili chocolate but it is far more.common and less technical/original.
Let's say it's a safe back up.
