I tend to use liquid foundation on top of a makeup primer (tinted for color correction if you have reddish skin or dark spots) as a base, contouring with either powder or a darker foundation before setting with mineral powder. By skin tends to be on the oily side and that seems to work well enough. (Holds up for one day of con in tropical weather) If your skin is dry, consider a light moisturiser after washing your face.

Foundations from brands like Revlon, Makeup forever, Torte are pretty good

I just used a pair of silicone inserts. They basically feel and look a little like chicken cutlets.
You can find them at a lot of places, like craft stores and online shops, but you probably already know that since you got some already.

Beard shadows in my experience side on the blue/green shade, similar to when you shave you underarms. You can counter the blue tinge with a yellow based concealer. Some people use a peachy/salmon colour, but I find yellow works a bit better for me.

Skin tone matching, if you're a complete newbie to makeup, just go to your local makeup store like an Ulta or Sephora and ask them to match for you.

Please don't use black eyeliner or dark brown shadow unless you're really dark-skinned. The biggest mistake I see is when people use shadow colors that are way darker than their skin. That's a surefire way to get the infamous dirt face.

I say go for it, even if you don't think you pass! You just need to be confident I'd say. Hell, I wore my first crossplay to a normie Halloween costume party where only a small handful of people knew me/knew who I was dressed as and had a blast. I think you should also consider padding your hips. In your last pic, what stands out to me is that your figure looks "off" because there isn't enough definition between your waist and hips.

Alright so, as a muscular person you have to work within certain boundaries in order not to look too masculine. So, you're mostly going to want to be working with things that hide the shape of your body, so stuff that's puffy or loose fitting, if you have big delts puffed or mutton sleeves will do a good job of masking that, if you have big muscular calves, leg warmers, you get the idea.

Hip pads could help give you a more hourglass figure rather than a v shape, but even if you're fridgemode they would probably be an improvement unless you have wide hips or dont think you need them or s/t idk.

And this is just general crossplay advice but posture and poses are important and can really help make your body look more feminine in shape.

I mean, it depends on the look/character you're going for. I just bought a cheap pair of padded panties on ebay that look really good on me. You could also make your own, depending on how much hip you need. you just need to make the hips proportional to the breasts. Depending on what outfit you're wearing, a corset also helps.

I've got a really deep voice normally but I can bring it up to a passable pitch if I speak softly.

That being said, most of the time I just don't give a damn and let it rock since my normal voice gets some pretty funny reactions too...

It has been mentioned in past threads that you could just keep talking to a minimum as well and just speak very softly and you could make that work.

In the end it really comes down to what your goals are. Voice training works, but you have to put in the time and effort.

New makeup test.
Smiling is difficult and I apologize. It just feels unnatural and I'm so worried it'll look awkward in a shot.

I assure you I don't look so unhappy in person.

Liquid eyeliner is difficult to use but I'm glad to learn it is easier to take off than the gel/crayon one I used to have. I also forgot how much of a difference eyelashes make although they're not very visible here. I also began lining my lower eyelid.

Nope. Every time I go to an event where I do this sort of thing I tell myself to just not talk so much/loud but I end up having a great time that I just give up on the idea altogether.

Part of the satisfaction of doing this is seeing peoples' reactions when they realize you're not what they assumed you to be. To an extent, it may also help to mediate any misconceptions they might have about... guys who dress as women, basically. "Oh, it's just a guy who likes to dress as a girl but still acknowledges he's a guy," kind of thing.

Voice-wise, find how low you can get at your natural voice without it sounding abnormal. Try to push your voice daily at that level and it will sound more natural and be more comfortable over time. Not saying I've done this for crossplay, but I do vocal training and can comfortably hit lower and higher ranges because I've practiced out of my natural comfort range a bunch. Or just go hardcore and take testosterone.

If I'm buying a cosplay, and crossplaying as a girl, do I buy in female sizes M/L? custom sizing?? Or do I order in male sizing?

Working on my Mike "Vampir" Makowski crossplay from South Park, but I'm stuck on what to do with the makeup... He is supposed to be 11 or 12, so I can't have super strong contouring, but I don't want to look too feminine either.

cute anon, i love south park. hes a vamp kid so id say your eye shadow should be alot darker. and line your waterline with black if you havent already. also fill in your eye brows with black. looooots of black. for contouring, go for the upper cheekbones with a dark brown, dont use black for the contour as it would be super obvious. maybe contour your nose a bit thinner while your at it? also your jaw line! just make sure you blend your contour out nicely.
the main thing i have to say is all your blacks are too light. if you want some suggestions try the nyx jumbo eye pencil. its what i use, and the black is SUPER black. for the contour any cheap medium brown eye shadow should work. also its an extra step but if i were you id paint my nails black for extra vampyness.

It depends on your measurements, how form-fitting the outfit is, and the material it is made from. (If it is flexible or stiff, etc.) Some sellers may also have a preference to make in smaller sizes, so rule of thumb is to go by inches/centimeters rather than M/L/XL, etc.

Guys tend to have wider shoulders so even if your waist measurement is correct, you'll still want to measure them. Sometimes, the only difference between men's and women's size is the shoulder width.

Lastly, message your seller if you are unsure about anything. Last resort is to just buy a larger size and have alterations done to fit you better. It is often easier to make an outfit smaller in this case than to make it larger if you happened to order a size that was too small.

It depends on where you purchase from and what size you are.
I'm a small skinny guy, so I usually can get by with a women's medium size, since I usually wear men's smalls. I also can wear size 10 to 12 dresses.
However, I recently purchased a shirt off of Amazon that was shipping from China, and thus I had to go up to a large, instead of my usual medium.
Luckly, US and UK sizing is pretty straight forward and easy to figure out...except shoes, those took me a little bit.

I really like how you did the eyelid fold makeup - how does it look irl? Whenever I try, I find that it looks OK through a viewfinder but pretty cringe to the naked eye. I think you need a little stronger contouring under the eyebrows at the bridge of your nose. Your eyebrows also look unnaturally immaculate and dark; maybe lighten up a couple shades on that.

Gurrrl you need some makeup. People may mock YouTube tutorials, but they totally work and give you the kind of info you need. It will help with contouring and what to do with eyebrows.

I have fairly thick eyebrows myself, but I kind of like them on myself as a boy, so I use the glue stick trick.

Posted a costest of this Gumi a while back, but finally had the chance to wear it this the past weekend.

Really liked how it turned out but the fit was really tight so it was hard breathing sometimes specifically when sitting in a car.

Had a laugh walking up to the guy at the front desk of the hotel who was all smiles up until he heard me talk >_>

Also went with friends to our usual chinese place for dinner and I swear the staff there increased their customer service like 3-4x compared to normal specifically for our table - it was hilarious.

Other than the fit being difficult at times, the dress has a metal/plastic(?) circular thing along the bottom to keep the form without needing a petticoat which is nice, but that also means that moving through tight spaces/crowds is pretty difficult. I was always afraid that it might snap or something then I'd be pretty doomed lol.

In all honesty I don't really know. Might have something to do with the fact that it's a kind of hole-in-the-wall with really good, cheap food where nobody (as far as I've seen) really dresses up to go to.

On a somewhat related note, I also wore my Libeccio cosplay for the first time this past weekend. Ditched the canons in my car at the con because they are impossibly hard to walk around with and I was afraid that they would just break when moving through crowds/around things...

That being said, compared to everything else I've worn, I really liked the simplicity of the one-piece design. It was super comfy to wear and even if it gets a little dirty I imagine it washes really easy.

You got to eat ~500 kcal a day under your tdee (look up a calculator online) while getting about 1 gram of protien per pound of your body weight so if you 175lb, eat 175 grams of protien. Up to 1.5 grams of protien is recommend if you are doing cardio.

I forgot to add that you will not gain muscle unless your are lifting weights and are eating in a caloric surpluses while progressivly overloading your muscles. So unless you have ready built some muscle mass I wouldn't worry about trying to lose any muscle until you get to the lower bodyfat range but your body will most likely start to cannibalize your muscle anyway. You can still work out but just stick to the higher rep range with alower weight. Also try to get your protien from soy products as they will effect your estrogen levels for the better.

Thank you for the advice! The skirt was ironed of course before I wore it but it just got wrinkled so easily throughout the day. I believe this photo was taken in the evening. Any tips how I can retain it looking good all day? As for the wig, it was a really shitty one and I have already began looking into better ones. The one I had was so bad at tangling that I almost didn't even wear the costume at all but still decided to go with it as a test run.

Hi all, I just got redirected here from the love live general and I need some advice about cross playing.


I'm going in a group which is dressing up as the bokutachi no kiseki set. My gf suggested i do it when one of the other girls flaked out and I kinda jokingly said that I might, but after thinking about it I decided that I was and that I was going to do be the cutest cross i can.

The problem is that, since I'm not originally part of the group, I didn't get to pick my character and I got stuck with Rin. I have a kind of bulky build (someone earlier in the thread used the phrase "fridge mode" and that is probably applicable in my case) so I'm worried about looking out of place wearing her costume, especially because of the waist etc.


This is my first time cosplaying at all so any tips are appreciated!!

Not that I have much experience, but I'm afraid the character may be quite difficult to crossplay. Her rather short hair will probably make your male features stand out; but then again, maybe one expects her to have a bit of a boyish look, then it might actually help.
The skirt is short and rather plain, revealing the size of your hips, so I guess you'll probably want to put some padding underneath. Also, because it's short, people may see that your legs are closer together than what one would expect from a woman.
Anyway, regarding your question about fridge mode, I think a good thing about the costume are the two black lines in front seperating the red and yellow-ish areas. If you can curve them inwards, I imagine this should visually shrinken your waist.
See the image here; Madoka's costume is similar in this regard. Left was me last year, then I narrowed the front part so the two pink lines curve inwards. As you can see, my torso is pretty straight, but in my opinion the curved lines conceal that quite a bit.

(The right image is the only image I have for now from a con last weekend; it was just a snapshot after a posing workshop, so the lighting is rather bad.)

It's honestly pretty hard to see that you're not a boy in this. I think you have pink eyeshadow on but if I were you I would look up tutorials for slightly heavier types of eyeshadows because the pink really doesn't show up much on your skin. I know Madoka is a young girl but with the color barely showing on your skin it might be the better option. I would consider false lashes too since yours don't seem long enough to be able to tell you have any.

Also your upper lip seems bug me for some reason? I think it makes you look a little masculine. Maybe look into how to fill your lips so you can change the shape a bit to something more feminine/young.

Your chin sort of sticks out as well. Maybe look into contouring?

Regarding the eyes as a whole, I think one problem with at least the image on the right is that hair is covering most of the space above the eyes and to their side. But you're right, I'll see to practicing combining darker colors with light pink.
My chin sticks out because it does indeed stick out. I'll try to at least reduce the shadow between lips and chin next time.

Thanks. In fact, I'm wearing a corset (more of a corsage, really, though) on the right, which is actually the reason why the boobs look off (at least why I feel they look off): I'm wearing silicone pads, and when sitting down the corset tends to slip under them, so I have to rearrange them afterwards; which is difficult without a mirror. I personally like the form and size, though, because they do look much like Madoka's.
I'm afraid to invest in a cincher, for two reasons: First, it's just a large investment. I don't think I should buy one off the internet because then I can't see how well it shapes, how well it feels and whether it's the right size.
Second, it probably won't do much good for this very costume. I already reduced the waist size by 12 cm in total, and I simply won't get it over my ass if I reduce it any further (without rather complicated modifications). The alternative would be to sew a new costume myself, but that's a whole different story altogether.

Regarding the sleeves, I normally have something attached to both sleeves to draw them inwards (making them look less floppy and the shoulders narrower). Until now, I used nylon string for that, but that snapped just when I arrived at the con. I'll try to use a strip of an overhead transparency now instead (unless I happen to find something more suitable).
I'm still working on the lower part of the sleeves. On the right image, I'm wearing armbands with fiberfill (I hope that's the right word) attached to them to make the sleeves puffy near their bottom end, but I need to make them more voluminous. I'm still trying to figure out a way to make the pink constriction stripe tighter. Maybe I'll just have to build the sleeves from scratch myself.
