I'm aware that in 2013 there was a big shitstorm among major banks (especially Canadian) regarding trading cryptocurrency online and their hostility towards traders (shutting down/freezing accounts, flagging for laundering etc).

How hostile are these banks currently this year? Should I forewarn my bank that I am interested in trading cryptocurrencies? If not, what's the common solution for digital currency traders?

You can exchange your btc for fiat once it's off the exchange. The bank won't know because its not coming from an exchange account. Just sell bitcoins on localbitcoins.
