I'm thinking about starting a business using heavy equipment and was wondering if anyone here has experience?

A couple of options and questions but the 2 ways i could go about it is either get a loan for about 300k worth of 2nd hand equipment ( Excavator, Dozer, Dump truck ) or rent brand new equipment for a huge monthly fee.

The second hand market is damn good at the moment and I was gonna check out some repossessed machinery auctions and basically hoping I could get an absolute bargain, but while the prices are good for older equipment I'm not sure how much time or money I should factor in for breakdowns, I'd be pretty worried for example blowing a motor in an 80t excavator in some rural middle of nowhere.

Renting would be hugely expensive and the money is gone, but with brand new equipment and full breakdown service maybe it could be worth the extra money.

I don't know much about renting equipment but would they be alright with me getting some basic figures or are they only gonna want to quote if they are fairly sure of getting business? It's going to be a year or so before I can set this up, but I've got a ballpark that it will be at least 30k a month to rent the equipment, I'm not sure if they would do a better deal though because I'm renting it longer term.

And my next plan of attack was to get a hold of a CAT ( I only know CAT gear ) mechanic and hopefully he could give me some advice on specific models and inspect equipment eventually.

While renting brand new models seems tempting, I know at my work we have some old gear that's like 20 years old and keeps going while the 2012 model keeps breaking down every week.

If your looking to buy equipment look in oil country. A lot of cheap equipment for sale in Alberta right now.

Thanks 30 dollar oil prices.

Are you trying to become a dirt contractor then? What are you going to be doing?

Gotta love that tier 4 shit, eh?
