Why would they? A company is most likely to be listed on its local exchange. Things that affect its value are most likely to happen during the working hours. Traders go home at night, same as everyone else. Why should an exchange be open when the stock prices aren't going to change much if at all?

they do. sorta. After hours trading is a real thing.

Most traders want to have their eyes on the ball from start to end and to do that you have to have an "end". When you combine that with the fact that trading would significantly drop off after traditional office hours- it's just not worth it to keep the machine running 24/7.
