Your university can probably help you get a patent. They will take a percentage from any profits you make from it though.

>get provisional patent filed for a few hundred bucks
>get a few working models made
>get some sales
>if its a hit, take it to a patent attorney and get a legit patent on it

Go to USPTO.gov and read up on all the shit they have online to help you. Then search for and read patents for the things similar to your thing that already have patents and then copy closely the format and file. I have done this three times successfully ON MY OWN WITHOUT a lawyer and it has worked. Good luck.
