a 401k account is designed to have lows and highs because it more closely follows the market the younger you are to give you more chances for gains.

as you get older it slowly becomes safer.

you want it to be volatile because otherwise you get less than 2% on average. You want 6-12% over time or you won't really compound much value.

If you have a 401k just ignore anything but the company closing that handles your 401k
