my opinions on some popular anime series:
would recommend the following
cowboy bebop (would benefit from a more stringent storyline tho)
psycho pass (second season was meh)
kill la kill (many haters but how can you find this not entertaining and funny?)
fullmetal alchemist (after you made it to like episode 3-4)
deathnote (although it gets pretty stupid with time, especially after that one thing happens, nice concept and story)

would recommend the following with restrictions:
attack on titan - was hyped as shit but apart from great animation, soundtrack and a very good beginning, it becomes an annoying teenage anime with shitty characters, especially eren that whiny bitch
k-on! - i loved it but you have to free your mind and open for their world of music and moe. great to come down after a long day
ghost in the shell - great first movie but the series are far from its quality, storywise, in its moral implications and animation quality. if you like the futuristic world and characters you may enjoy it.
evangelion - if shinji and the pseudo-pseudo-intellectual ending (yes, double, its not that pseudo actually) doesnt bothers you, very cool concept and execution. dont miss the end of evangelion. also what the fuck is that 3.33 movie? either way its basically a must, let alone for its impact on anime as whole

also, DBZ, one piece and probably naruto (didnt bother to test it) cant really compare and are generally favoured because they're easy to watch and have nostalgia bonus points. i think DB and the beginning of DBZ had its moments but so much fillers, plot holes, more power levels and really not that great animation
dont justify 500 episodes.

Rin tries incredibly hard to be the perfect magus but ultimately can't make the tough decisions when pressed, she's skilled but inexperienced from her young age. Contrasting to lancer's master from Zero, supposedly an incredibly powerful mage who also doesn't know how to fight properly, except there's no reasoning for this and he's shown to supposedly be a planner from setting up his engagement with Kerry, the result is that he doesn't come off as fucking retarded instead of a flawed character.

kiri is nothing like shirou. he consistently acts and gets results. he's not a shonen motivational poster boy. yes, kiri is an adult and already has his maximum training/potential/skills. shirou only "progresses" due to the gross incompetence of everyone else, his enemies simply letting him walk away all the time, and the avalon saving his pussy ass.

no, shirou is not a foil to saber. they're basically the same fucking character of "i do whats right because its right" and thats why they romance. kiri and saber were opposite where saber valued honor and level combat, and kiri didnt give a shit and simply wanted results regardless of sacrifice or perception of honor. thats why they clashed so much, but the only clash saber and shirou had was "you're the master, you should leave the fighting to me" "no way, i cant just let a girl fight". also kiri wasnt supposed to be a foil kotomine, they were supposed to be as close as possible to the same character with different motives.

tbh this one's overrated, sure it's got some gory scenes but it's not that bad compared to others. Hell, Tokyo Ghoul and Deadman Wonderland had less gory scenes but they made me cringe harder because they had the right atmosphere behind it that truly creeped me out.
