I worked in internet porn for about ten years. Fairly removed from content production, and video production was kind of a sibling industry, but there was some overlap, and our conferences in Vegas would sometimes coincide or go back to back.

I don't know much about Max specifically. When he was doing those videos, a typical base rate for LA/Southeast Florida/New York porn shoots was $300 for a woman per scene, $100 for a guy. Some guys would just go to parties and talk to women (worked best to bring a couple women with you). Others would hit up strip clubs, but you had to make a deal with their management or risk being booted. I remember one company who'd travel around the US & Canada filming gangbangs with a crew of weirdos, they said they'd get tons of letters from female fans who wanted to get banged regardless of the money. They said they'd even get letters from sub-18-year-olds planning ahead. It's a big world, with plenty of people who do unusual things. There's always a way to make money, though doing the whole thing, from finding girls, contracts, makeup, sets, filming, post production, all the way to marketing and selling to consumers, that's a whole lotta shit. I mean I knew some energetic guys who do it, but they were the exception, and you have to have some competency in several disparate areas. Of course some things are pretty easy to farm out, like you can just rent a site on a server, and pay someone for a site design, but everything costs, and it's hard starting out needing cashflow.

A lot of companies do only isolated pieces of that, like some people do nothing but find models, others will create content for licensing to other company's websites, or create exclusive content to order for those companies. I was mainly in marketing, and only saw photo shoots at conventions.

I think I'd figure out what you think you're best at, and focus on making money in some way surrounding that. Like if you're really good at talking to attractive women, recruiting and photography might be a good specialty; shoot a few women, then see if any sites/publishers are interested in licensing that sort of content. From personal observation, it seemed to help guys if they had a girlfriend/wife working with them, or at least a female partner, to help with certain aspects of the business. You might want to go to the websites that look like what you want to produce, figure out who they're run by, and contact those companies to see if there might be some interest. Networking in person at industry conferences, or on industry websites, is really useful.
