Goth didnt appear till 1980ish. '78 if you take the Damned as the first post-punk, before Goth really got a name.
Second Wave Goth came along with more drum machines etc in about '83-84 - xymox, the sisters, and the Batcave bands - Specimen, sex gang children, alien sex fiend.
Third wave was about '88, - 'Neph, and the likes. it then died a little and went underground, apart from the sisters' Vision Thing scraping the charts.
and had a fourth Wave in '96 or so with Marylin Manson, And then somewhere around '99 it just got into a blur with EBM and Industrial, and all that bleepy shit and twats with glowsticks and synthdreads. Bugger me if I know what happened after that, all this modern stuff is shite in my books.

Bring back Pat Morrison, aquanet hairdos that murdered the ozone layer, and the good old days of bootleg vinyl, I say.

I last saw them last year, and they're wonderful. Best bit is I finally, after 26 years, saw them with Tony Pettit on bass. Never thought I'd hear THAT fucking amazing sound live after they split. Last Exit for the Lost. I fell in love with that song first time I heard it, back in 1988.


Also, if you like the 'Neph, try Last Rites album "Guided by Light" - its the Wright Brothers' and Nod's band after they split off from the 'neph.

I saw them in a filthy little club in 2001, supported by Jesus Loves Amerika, (who were fucking abysmal...) and Last Rites pretty much flattened the crowd. Probably the best gig I'd ever been to. And only Alien Sex Fiend's 30th anniversay gig is as memorable - and that was because Nik Fiend is a complete loony.

you have no idea how much fun it was, when 2000+ goths would take over an entire sleepy yorkshire fishing town, every single B&B, every single cottage, packed with goths.

one year, the weather turned bad, the roads flooded, and the trains werent running. We drank the entire town dry. Every pub, the supermaket shelves. Everything, dry.

We used to go down to the beach and have beach parties at halloween, and Giolla would set up fireworks that were more spectacular than Whiby's official council displays, and Preacher would start doing firewalking. And we'd just party, through the night, or go up to the abbey ruins and get off with people, or go have a foursome in a hotel, or the likes.

It was wonderful, and we all spent the entire time laughing our arses off.

Off to the Spa, to see Manuskript play for the 58th time, or 101 other bands (I still remember Clan of Xymox there - and the Mission, with everyone laughing at Wayne Hussey getting drunk and trying to pull. ).

Those were the days.

And I still cry when I hear certain songs, and remember Tals' funeral, there on the beach in whitby, before we lit a boat on fire, to send him to Valhalla.

I'll never forget that.

just a tiny little seaside town.

and we invaded it, and took over - to the point that the chavs, the neds and the likes ran away. The police loved us - the weekends became the quietest of the year for them, because while we were all off our tits on chemicals, there were no fights, no trouble in the streets etc.

was fantastic. We'd quite literally own the place for the week around the event - hundreds, thousands of goths, shopping in the co-op in full get-up, staying in guest houses, getting done up in full gear to go out for a run along the beach in 30lbs of black velvets. It was hysterically funny.

Giolla would arrange fireworks displays on the monday so we'd all go along there for these huge beach parties, bonfires, all that. The actual music events in the spa would have great bands - Xymox, Alien sex Fiend, Mission, the Dream disciples, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry, Scary Bitches, Screaming Banshee Aircrew, Deathboy... the list goes on. all playing, in this really nice social atmosphere. you got pretentious cunts trying to be really regal, and everyone else just there for the pure fun of getting done up and going to party to great music. And shit music. the really crap bands made it all the funnier. We all got done up in fishnet and body armour for Sigue Sigue Sputnik.

And Lucyfur DJing in between the bands. I miss Mel. She died of cancer, 7, 8 years ago. We used to go to edinburgh for events she was doing in fetish clubs, just to dance. I really miss those nights.

And the 80's night in laughtons, the most disgusting, sticky, filthy, near-condemned (it eventually did get condemned as unsafe... and they opened it up specially for the goths for a year.) club, a total dive, which we turned into 300 goths dancing in heat like Satan's crotch, to 80's disco pop. Fantastic.

And best thing was? It was fun. Pure, unadulterated fun. A small sort of warp in spacetime, where the reality of the 9-5 shit was forgotten.
