Had heard good things about this movie, but ultimately hated it. Feel like it tries way too hard to hamfist the entire 99% mentality behind the riots years ago or social unrest that it makes the setting and characters unbelievable. Characters feel like they are simply behaving the way they are to service the ultimate message of the movie rather than being as a believable character.

Still think it's an average movie, but not deserving of the ratings it has on Rotten Tomatoes or from what I've heard other people claim.

>>
>>595461761
>the avengers
Can I just say, yeah mediocre movie, story, blah blah typical joss whedon nothing about this movie is over the top.

But...

What marvel did build up to this movie was epic and innovating. They took 4 different movie titles and pointed towards one big collaboration putting them all together under one title. Years of anticipation and build up realized in one movie title, that is why it holds box office records, not because it was a great movie in and of itself.

This is why I don't believe this movie is overrated.

Don't understand the love for this. To me its only one step above Twilight, and it is just another tweenage movie. Main character is pretty much a pair of pants for women, like it was for Twilight.

Only reasons to watch this would be the special effects and Jennifer Lawrence.
>>
>>595462413
this is a solid movie, but nobody would dare argue that this movie is anything special or must see. I don't think this should be considered overrated.
>>
>>595457299
I enjoy other older horror movies, these three just didn't appeal to me, was just one scene after the other that didn't seem to mesh together at all. I assume it is something you had to watch when they first released, or when you were younger, watching them for the first time when you're 25 and in 2014 just means they weren't great. The practical effects and models and stuff were amazing, especially for their time, but the movies as a whole were just eh.

i have *never* seen requiem on anyone's top 10 lists or anything like that. nobody said it was a groundbreaking film or one of the greatest of it's genre.
>>
>>595464219
Confirmed for having not watched the movies at all. the storylines do tie together, and as far as horror goes, the last two were downright comedies.
>>
>>595464047
You pretty much just answered yourself as to why you don't like that movie while other people do. You aren't the demographic for those films, it's for the same people that like Twilight, teens, especially girl teens. The fact that the movie industry and media is trying to blow it up bigger than it is annoys me, you've got all those comedy spoof related movies coming out about it, then you've got movies trying to cash in on the same themes like Divergent, all the talk show hosts trying to pretend like they love the movies. All to get teen girls to obsess over them because the TV is telling them it's popular. But anyone that watches a movie for the movie and not for the hype surrounding it is going to find them shit because they are bland with nothing special.

Like this movie. Really wish I could love it.

Still think it's overrated to hell. Good special effects, but felt the plot was lackluster.
>>
>>595464579
Yeah I have watched them, I didn't say the story lines didn't mesh, I said the scenes didn't mesh. It's just one scene after another where something spooky happens, oh look the things coming out of the basement now, oh look he's getting a chainsaw attached to his arm, oh look some cool backwards footage of wax melting to look like a creature is coming to life. When you're whole horror plot can be summed up with "There is a cabin, and monsters happen." for two whole movies, then I'm not going to like it because of the lack of substance.

A movie should not be judged by its cultural impact, it should be judged by it's own standings. In fact the whole point of this thread is we are going against it's cultural impact (how popular it is) and saying they aren't that great. Yes Star Wars has had a huge impact in the world, no doubt about that, but as the movies stand by themselves, they are alright, nothing special.

As for the Avatar thing, he is probably talking about the TV show.

>How?

The collossal amount of money it made, they way it broke into China, and people licking the ass of Cameron for "pushing technology forward" (in the wrong direction; cg will never look good on its own and fuck 3d.)

It was the most celebrated film of all time and it's basically a children's cartoon. Compare it to an actual classic and you realise how awful the script/plot/acting/concept is. Only good thing about it is Sigourney Weaver in space again.

The thing about the great CGI in Avatar was they could only acomplish it because the human/real actors weren't mixed in with the CGI that much (and when they were you could see how much they stood out) when your whole world is CGI (and not to mention alien and strange looking) it's not hard to make it look great, because we don't have a point of reference of what that stuff is meant to look like and because we don't have a direct point of reference of what a real world filmed object looks like next to it. I'm terrible at explaining but I hope my point can be understood.

>they are alright, nothing special

Its nothing special because everything that was special about it has created a thousand and one derivative works that have saturated the market for almost half a century.

I understand that the overall story is pretty bland. The first one is the perfect stereotypical "hero does the thing" tale. But when judging a work as "overrated" you have to consider how it gained that rating in the first place. Its like calling the first wheel overrated because we live in a world where they're common now.

Because it was pretty. No one walked away from Avatar going "Jesus christ that just changed MY WHOLE LIFE and how I think about GOD AND THE UNIVERSE"

The whole thing about being "overrated" though is that the movie has to hold up to the rating that the general public give it, can you honestly say that Star Wars holds up to the praise it is given? The higher the praise the higher the bar, honestly I don't think there is any movie in existence that could live up to the hype that Star Wars has.

No, but I was also born in the 90s, when it was re-released for like the 20th time. I grew up in a culture saturated with references to it, spoilers for it, and every sci-fi work mining from it.

That being said, from my perspective the film is pretty basic. The story is good, because it sets out to do something and does it well, but I wasn't left really impressed.

Agreed, its got multiple plot holes for anyone who knows enough about science, sci fi or even has common sense. Also it was too long at least 30mins of "feelings" could have been cut out of that B- pos.

Most of the AFI top 100 films. Particularly the higher rated films/classic films. I understand that they're pioneers in the movie industry, but I just don't think they should be rated that high.

I do enjoy these films by the way. Just don't agree with their rating.

Episodes four through six are not overrated, since they lived up to the hype they created. The rest of the Star Wars media, though, including cartoons and vidya, is overrated as fuck.
