I live in New Zealand. Tipping is no normal here and is only ever seen in either exceptional circumstances where somebody has gone out of their way completely to help you and give you amazing service, or you have a small amount of change that is not worth going to the hassle of putting it back in your wallet.

However, due to the way some people are payed in the US (tips make up their wage because their local governments are too lazy to actually correct the issue) I would tip because it is an accepted custom in the area. But I do not agree with tipping.

For instance, a person makes 3.75 being a waitress. And say minimum wage is 8.75 an hour. That's $5 difference. Soit's expected she can pull in that 5 bucks in an hour. I have a friend that was once a struggling actor. During this time he believed in the $1 or less per drink tip for when we went out.

Cut to a few years later and life has kicked his dream in the dick so he becomes a bartender like other failed actors. He now demands and makes a scene if someone doesn't tip a bartender or waitress 25-30% of a tab.

Needless to say I don't hang out with him too much anymore. He's also secretly embarrassed to tell people he's a bartender so he calls himself a "mixologist." Fuck bartenders.

I more often than not tip 5-10%, because most wait staff is terribly inattentive and rude. If they are not exceptional at their job I wont go higher, and often do not tip at all. However, if I am done eating and feel I have truly been "waited" on, that my patronage was appreciated and I was shown respect, I will tip upwards of 30%, though this rarely happens.

This thread has sort of devolved into two people with completely different life goals trying to show the merits of what it is they do.

I'm gonna duck out with this last one.

There's a feeling you get when you walk out the door at 4 am and lock up... It's indescribable. It's like a mixture of emotions, adrenaline, and a little liquor. Regardless of where my life goes or what I end up doing or how much I end up making, I hope, at least while I'm young and tough, that I can hold down a bar job at a cool place one day a week. It's a constantly revolving social scene of beautiful happy people, little drama here and there, but so much less garbage than the life I used to lead. By seeing people at their best and worst, happiest and saddest, it helps temper the bullshit of daily life by lending unlimited perspective...

True. But its a respect thing too I suppose, bartender being an actual profession in my eyes and one which deals with people at their worst on a constant, in your face basis. Servers get to walk away, the bartender doesn't.

Well that and a good bartender will know his booze and be helpful in that regard, even knowing mixes with skills he's learned. Waiters don't cook the food and likely don't know much about it outside of what they've been told to recommend
