I'm a TA for comparative religion classes (yay philosophy major! Whoooo! I get to teach something I barely studied and don't give a fuck about at all), so I'm saying here what I'd never be allowed to say there. Westerners exaggerate the bloodthirstiness of the Qur'an, but the exaggerations just aren't that huge.
If you go beyond the Qur'an and look at the hadith (basically just means "prophet's ways/rules") and the arguments between different sects over the hadith, yeah, it's pretty fucking crazy. But then so is the fact that people used to kill each other over transubstantiation vs consubstantiation.
The real problems are socio-economic and political, and Islam is a backdrop that's additionally troubling.
