I suck at skating. Last time I tried I hurt a little kid a full block away, no joke. Fucked up somehow, saved myself from eating shit, the board rocket off at ten billion miles an hour right into some poor unsuspecting little girls shin down the street. Just a disclaimer, I started skating a few years ago, pretty much the end of Junior year in highschool. I dropped it to have more time to focus on studies because I can't fucking multitask for shit. Just started again about 3 days ago, found this board in a friends shed and he said I could have it. its definitely an old board and I'm thinking about replacing it. Any pointers as to what deck/trucks/wheels I should get? I like my decks on the skinny side.

Yo lemme tell you a lil sumn about riding on the skinny side. I started out riding 7.75 and rode that for years. I moved and became friends with a local fella who has his own brand and has skateboards made and everything. Said friend also has a concrete miniramp he built in his backyard. I bought a board from him, an 8.5. It was a huuuuuuuuuuge step up, but once I got used to it it was good because I was doing a lot of vert skating. The board I just got is an 8.25. I've had other 8.25s on previous occasions and have found that the 8.25 is a good size for skating street as well as vert since its size somewhat in the middle.

I hear ya, luckily one of my friend's dad owned a lot of properties and he let us skate on all of them in specific areas. There's a guy that owns a deli up the street from me that did the same for local skaters since they kept him in business for his first few years. As a kid I never had a problem asking around for permission, I think a lot of skaters don't look at it that way which is a shame. It's always better to skate legally. The local police in my area always come out to the skate parks and talk with everyone and we all get along great. If course it took a long time to get there but it was worth it. Unfortunately, two towns over skating is a crime. If you're seen even walking with a deck in hand you're getting thrown in the back of a cruiser, deck confiscated, mandatory fine and community service for 6 months. We've been working on changing that for a long time.

My brother does 90% of the manufacturing. We use baltic birch and maple in a vacuum press. TiteBond III glue 4 ply or so together and then CNC out the pattern that I designed in AutoCAD. And yeah all art is mine.

Check your local skating laws if there are any. Also find the nearest skate park, that's where you're more likely to meet other skaters that just want to skate and not have a negative stereotype attached to them. Probably find some businesses sympathetic to the lack of places to skate as well.

Exactly. People who skate are usually genuine. Helping each other grow, improve their skills and skating is an outlet that allows them to do so. Its an activity that has limitless goals. The possibility of being able to overcome any challenge. Skating is a way of life for a lot of people. Age isn't much of a factor since you make a decision as soon as you pick up your first board or even watch someone skate for the first time. A decision to get on a see where it takes you. That's something that stays with you for life.

I understand, when I started the closest skate park was 2hrs away. Didn't make it there until I had been skating for 10+ years and you're damn right it was the first place I went when I got my license. Also, none of us had rides anywhere either, we had to skate to wherever we wanted to skate. It took many years and a lot of time and effort from many people to get my area's skaters hooked up. Regarding the safe zone, i'd leave it be unless it seems like they would want you to come check it out.

They could get all the shit they want with a job since they don't have bills. I got my first job at 14, bought a car because driving was my thing, was extra careful to drive by the books to work/school til I had a full license, spent what didn't go to gas and lunch on helping my family with groceries and such, my girlfriend and stupid shit that gave me a giggle... And occasionally ditch weed, but not wanting to fuck up what I'd earned kept me incredibly discreet and free of desires to cause any trouble. I could afford fun OR trouble. but not both.

Course I was always a little different anyway, bright but lazy, fairly introverted probably just from being bitter about everyone else having stable families and finances and getting shit handed to them constantly... But I had cool shit to show those who I spent my time with. Gaming shit mostly, I found out about emulation and force feedback wheels and hifi audio around then, bought a nice pair of Sennheisers and a really cool media player with awesome Audio hardware that played every format I ever found and a touchscreen and 8 hours of video/30 audio before the iPod touch was a thing.. I had a new laptop, a neat wheel controller that had motors to kick, slip and fight you back for Gran Turismo 4, I bought 3 wiis on launch night and sold 2 for a few hundred in profit on ebay, and I usually had at least a half tank of gas and some money to see a movie or take friends/family out to eat.

The experience from Which all helped immensely when I found myself moving out a week after my 17th birthday. Not kicked out, I did it to help my family and soon to be wife after shit in her life hit the fan...

Sorry if none of this is helpful, just where my mind went, and I imagine these kids might have similar feelings or life experience I did.

As far as creating artwork? Not huge, most kids are too busy smoking weed, skating and fucking up to actually put some effort into art. If you're dealing with a kid that has even a slight interest in it, tell them to practice the shit out of it. Great stress relief and it's just cool as fuck to get your mind vomited out on some paper, wood, cement, or whatever.
