Lots of places depending on the scene. Many move to Cali, but Denver is the hot spot right now for creative people in the West it seems. People from AZ often move northwest too because living in the desert gives a lot of people a strong affinity for rain and green. Though not many musicians I know move northwest. Phoenix is still really big so there are lots of jobs, and housing is cheap. The 'youth culture' in Phx is not noteworthy in any particular way.

What's so bad about Maryvale? gangs? Drugs? Thugs? Violence? Crime? All of the aforementioned? Is it legitimately as hardcore/violent as the worst parts of Phoenix?

I was born and raised in Chandler, also lived in Payson for 16 years, then in east Mesa for a while, and now south Scottsdale (not the nice part, more like the ghetto of Scottsdale, near 68th St. and Thomas), but I have not been over to the west valley much at all.

I did find myself in some of the seemingly bad parts of Phoenix fairly recently - around 32nd St. and Thomas, 43rd Ave. and Camelback, and 27th Ave. and Indian School - and they all seemed like they were pretty fucking unsafe places that made me uneasy to be in. Is anyone on here familiar with any of these areas? If so, thoughts and opinions? Are these neighborhoods pretty bad, in terms of what Phoenix has to offer? Or are there worse parts of Phoenix? And is Maryvale worse than these parts of Phoenix?

When I was growing up (I'm in my late-30s now), I always heard/thought of south Phoenix as being the worst/most-dangerous place in the valley. And I'm sure there are still some really fucked-up areas there; however, it seems like there are now also some really bad areas in the west valley towards Glendale, Sunnyvale, Maryvale (assuming those all qualify as the west valley).

How do you think the bad parts of Phoenix compare to the bad parts of other places like Los Angeles? Oakland? Albuquerque? Chicago? Detroit? Memphis? New Orleans? Does Phoenix even compare at all to cities like these?

Phoenix is REALLY not very ghetto. Tucson in its entirety except for right around UofA is probably as dangerous as the crappiest parts of Phoenix, and even then it's not that dangerous. The chances of getting shot are pretty small in Phoenix. Maybe mugged in a shifty area...but it's not like if you drive a car through "the wrong neighborhood" you'll get car jacked. There's some drugged out people for sure. There are some really shitty blocks, but no large scale gang activity.

I was actually at that intersection several times while I was in that area. Are you talking about the corner of 32nd St. and Thomas where the Goodwill is? I didn't get over behind that plaza, so I'm not sure what it's like back there, but there is a Circle K on 32nd St. just north of Thomas that is not on a nice block and the people there are shady, weird, wild, and pretty fucking scary. The apartment complexes behind that Circle K on the east side of 32nd Street are seriously sketchy and I was really fucking uneasy being around them. And, no, I was not there doing/looking for anything illegal. But, the vibe in those ghetto complexes and from the people there is disconcerting, for sure.
