I remember seeing it on an IQ test once when I was younger. I tried to ask for more details but the bitch giving the test didn't know either. The way it's presented, this question makes you feel like you have to think outside the box, 16 being the obvious answer. But if you point out that in this question, a triangle can be made of smaller triangles, it ruins it because the person answering now knows to look for compound triangles. Without knowing what the actual answer counts, two answers are equally correct:
17 if you count the big one, but that opens up a whole shitstorm about what counts and what doesnt. If you say that a triangle that counts towards your answer can be made of smaller triangles, then what about the ones made from 4 basic triangles? also, can a triangle occupy the same space as another triangle? Yes, if the solution is anything but 16. if you want to count the overall triangular shape as one, then you have to also consider "triforces", upside-down triforces and the larger ones with 9 basic triangles.
