Serious question.

I have a roommate and long time friend who used to 420blazeitfaggot everyday all day. For years. He was extremely happy with THC in his system and a nice vidya to play. He's a simple man with simple interests. Recently, however, he's had a big problem. Starting a few months back whenever he smokes he gets this insane heart rush. He says it feels life threatening and it lasts for hours. It happened out of the blue one day and it scared him so much that he laid off smoking for a week or two. He said once and awhile he would feel some heart palpitations and his chest didn't quite feel right. After a short break from smoking he decided it was safe to try again. Turned out to be a bad idea, he smoked around 10-11pm and was awake all night borderline freaking out. He laid in bed with his heart almost beating out of his chest until about 5am and he went to the ER. He explained everything to them, and they basically told him it was probably anxiety and maybe a mix of lack of sleep and dehydration.

Now he thinks that it might be anxiety, or even panic attacks, but why would it suddenly start out of nowhere with no end in sight? He said his chest feels kind of strange now and again and he can also feel some sort of heart palpation at least once a day. That sounds like a sort of thing that shouldn't linger.

Now he's not an extremely unhealthy guy. He's probably around average weight, like 130lb 5'8". He doesn't eat that great and he gets decent exercise about 8 hours/day at work.

I'm looking for any advice what this might be, because I feel bad for the guy. He's starting to drink every night to make up for it. He's changed a lot since he's had to stop smoking - he's a lot more pissy, argumentative, and generally unhappy.

TLDR; help - friend has panic attack symptoms when he gets high and is now depressed with sobriety.
