The crytals used during episodes 4-6 were all artificial (with the possible exception of lukes first lightsaber). This caused the lightsabers o be much more stable.

My guess would be he is using a natural crystal and has impowered the crystal him/herself.

Also the blade is quite long, so it would be likely to become unstable and such length.

Every dolt that says a guard is a good idea is missing a few points. Every time a hand was chopped off by an opponent it was as the blade was being knocked aside. They can use the force or fighting stances to block, not all sword fighting is the same. it's a theatrical gimmick that is woefully useless compared to most forms of weaponry anyway, including Star Wars weaponry. When they Jedi were being wiped out they could only deflect so many blasters before being overwhelmed. For what it does it serves a purpose, this guard thing is just reinventing the wheel for a new audience that's fed up with lens flares on everything and JJ needed a new way to spruce up things for the iGeneration and their simply "shiny red ball" minds.

In the wake of the prequels, I think the bar has been set pretty low for Abrams to pull this one off. Obviously, they know the reaction to the previous films and the fanbase's desire to return to the world + style of 4-6. Regarding OP's shitpost, there have always been women main characters/jedi/sith in the series as well as nigs. I can guarantee neither will be the primary protagonist or antagonist of this one, as is the case for most scifi movies. As for the lightsaber syle, why would the sith/jedi using it not know what they were doing if it has a crossguard? What if Darth Maul accidentally stabbed himself during the fight scene in Phantom Menace? Personally, I think we're in for a treat with this one.
