Look, if you really want a mainstream anime that most people would enjoy, that has AMAZING English voice acting (because, let's face it, the Japanese voice acting is typically much better, such as with Death Note), look no further than FMA.

Cowboy Bebop is an ultra classic than no true anime fan will fail to have on their top 10 list, but it tends to be a hit or a miss due to their unique method of story telling.

Ignore all those Gundam, Evangelion, Ghost in the Shell, Blue Gender futuristic cyberpunk fanboy faggots. If you liked Death Note in particular, you likely will not care for the futuristic action virgin weeaboo shit much, since they tend to be less plot-twist-intellect-driven, and more OOHH LOOK AT US AND OUR SI-FI REFERENCES AND BIG HUMANOID GUNSHIPS BOOM BOOM WE'RE SO COOL

Great Teacher Onizuka too, if you can put up with some mild weeaboo faggotry. Great plot, but moreso comedy and drama than action. And, of the super long, overly drawn out, action animes inspired by Dragonball Z, such as Naruto, One Piece, and Bleach, Bleach is definitely the best one. Specifically, if you liked the whole Shinigami plot device from Death Note, you can relate a bit of that to Bleach's Soul Society shit. You might have to lower yourself to being able to tolerate a bit more of the weeaboo faggot shit, but. Bleach has so many different, unique, unforgettably awesome characters and such a great build-up to the "final battles" with them. It reproduces a lot of that moral grey-area that was present in Death Note, where 20 episodes later the main character's sworn enemy might become their greatest ally.

Bleach, above all else, will surely give you plenty to watch. I mean, you could start now and still be watching a month later. I really need to get caught up on it myself.

a little guide:

1) don't trust /a/, their taste is shit
2) don't spoil yourself, try to read stories without knowing anything first
3) try to judge a series after reading it, not based on what you heard/read before
4) that said, don't assume something is good just because it's viewed as a classic or masterpiece (look at titanic)
5) don't look too deep, not anything has an implicit meaning and with certain exceptions (i.e: symbolism related to japanese folklore that you might not know), there's no such thing as a manga that requires lots of reflection for you to get it's message. if people say it's "too deep", they're either overanalyzing or didn't get it themselves.
6) give every anime at least a 1-2 episode chance, the intro or first chapter might be misleading.


a good anime i recommend would be Full Metal Alchemist. there's 2 series, 1 follows it's own storyline and FMA Brotherhood follows the manga, they're independent so i recommend watching both. i also recommend going with regular-movie-brotherhood, but that's personal.
