I'm steve the vocalist of Exotype on Rise Records. I'm on tour with the amity affliction and for the fallen dreams, and I'm bored in the van. Ask me anything!
What drugs are in the van right now Steve?
inb4 not a cop
I'm a pterodactyl. See? I have a picture and everything.
Why is the Australian and American metalcore an hardcore scene turning into a huge pile of breakdowns and softly sung bitchweak melodies all about how that girl broke up with someone and how many anchors someone has tied to their feet?
Lol beautiful. You fucks should've stopped in El Paso since you're already in Texas.
Nobody good likes to play for us spics. Saw Suffocation the other day but eh.
Because that's what people want and enjoy writing. I personally don't like to conform to those stigmas. We have breakdowns and clean singing, but I try not to be a wuss about it
Fair points. It's getting out of hand though, like the current scene is like the whole man overboards tssf pop punk epidemic all over again. Like there's a lot of good music coming out of it but bloody hell is there some shit stuff.
I gave a listen to Wide Awake, and the soft vocals are pretty decent, you could actually make some great music if you stuck to that. Metalcore screams are bullshit, why not opt for proper metal?
I did the whole proper metal thing for years. There's no money or career in it unless it's done properly, and I can't do it properly because I'm a middle class American and have little to be truly angry about hahaha
Why do you have such a shit taste in metal?
Yo so I'm listening to wide awake and it's actually pretty good, but I'm downloading it from youtube-mp3 bc I have $0.45 in my bank account. Sorry for stealing your music, come to Melbourne sometime and I'll shout you all a homebrew.
That was kinda confusing to read but anyway, dude I reckon Amity have changed heaps but it's kind of a good thing, the really early stuff was almost a chore to listen to it was just so grating. I think in the case of amity the softer vocals really even it out. They're all still a bunch of bitchboys though.
aha no worries then, yeah like Chasing Ghosts was fucking top tier imo, Youngbloods was the ultimate and the new stuff is like dudes if you had something that sounded that good why would you change it.
>we wanted to combine some eclectic tastes and it just ended up working out!
Electronic/metal/hardcore has been done to death and proved popular as fuck in the past few years, nothing different there.
Get it man! I'd prefer people buy it of course but I'd rather people listen to it rather than not listen to it. Our debut is all about educating people on our sound and brand.
>im thinking of downloading your album
without you doing it
>$0 to the band, 0 new fans
with you doing it
>$0 to the band, 1 new fan, potential $ to the band in the future
only idiots criticise piracy on this level
Well stop being disrespectful to emo teens. It's a phase, not a disorder. I cut my arms with a razor blade because it feels good, not for fucking attention. Ok? Stop it before I kll myself
Since when did I say anything about any of that? You want honesty, the only thing that pisses me off about that band is fans constantly comparing it to my darling Slayer. I refuse to believe they could be considered in the same genre.
>500gb hardrive $50
>$0.03 worth of space....
Not worth it
yeah man you're doing it wrong, if you go on long tours youre supposed to fuck about
but i applaud your initiative to stay loyal, that's a big deal when youre in a band, hope the girl appreciates it
stay true, brother
no, there's so much variety
from Cynic and Aghora to Orphaned Land and Myrath, then european power metal, swedish melodic death, Japanese neoclassical wankery, everyone's alternative and experimental projects
shit I got a few gigabytes of Tom Odell and Elisa as well, it's not 100% metal, but there's a ton of metal that can't be put under one roof
Just took a listen to one of your bands' songs, and i can conclude it sounds like any typical insecure post-hardcore. Please just stop making music, there are enough shitty bands like yours.
most people grow out of the whole 'I'm-angry-at-my-mom-and-society/spiders-skulls-and-death-are-awesome' bullshit that more often than not charactarizes metal, by the age of 20-25 or so.
Why haven't you?
Do you look at past periods in your life, when you were younger, and kind of have that vicarious shame feeling and think 'oh geesh I was such an edgy faggot. and what was i thinking getting this horrendous tattooo.. ah well..' ?
Probably gangstarr and various old school hip hop like pendulum and demigodz. They don't necessarily give me shit, but they joke that when I'm driving it sometimes sounds like a hipster coffee shop or a traphouse>>575074789
I just listened to a few songs, they sound pretty good, don't trust me though, I like most conventional genres.
And songs you'd recommend new people to listen to to get the feel of your band?
You kinda avoided my questions.
That answer sounds like something you'd tell yourself to accept your past and move on with it.
That doesn't mean you can't deep down feel you've been an edgy twat or regret certain tattoos or other life choices
I don't like your music. I don't hate it either. Seems a bit stock nu-metal cookie monster growling. Overdone as fuck IMO. But you seem like a cool dude, and I wish you luck in finding a hook to set yourself apart from every other band on the warped tour.
>It's worked out spectacularly thus far
>five smelly adult dudes sleeping in a shitty van
OP, do you play in a metal band to show off how "Brutal" you sound or do you actually like metal? In my opinion your bands' sound is extremely forced and overproduced, it reminds me of 14 year old kids trying to act rebellious.
Also, what makes your band different from other bands in your opinion?
And also we aren't trying to reinvent the wheel. I'm aware metal electronic combination bands exist, but I've always felt it hasn't been perfected or even done properly yet. We haven't perfected it either, but I feel we are coming close. But that's just me. Haters gonna hate, and I say keep hating. As long as you're saying our name.
All the best for you Metal /b/ro I hope you perfect your sound in the future
>And also we aren't trying to reinvent the wheel.
The wheel doesn't need to be reinvented because it works.
This is art. You are treating it like craft. Treat it like art.
Be worth hearing.
Music is indeed art, but it's art based on a skill.if one is unskilled, can you really expect art that is listenable? You can give a 2 year old a guitar, their mindless strumming won't be art. The final product of precision musicianship and skill is art.
It seems to me you're aiming too much for a final product instead of going through the journey of magical jams and inventing refreshing stuff. But i guess i'm turning too much in a hippiefag nowadays.
I learned to focus on the future and the final product when I decided that music was not only my love, but my career and my way to make a living. Once a transition like this is made, technical ability, structuring, and foresight is what wins the game here. The game? To make good music so that I can make money and enable myself to continue making music.
Being content with workmanlike product is a one way ticket to has-beensville.
It's like my writing. You've never heard of it. It's never been published. It will not be published, because it's something that could be done by other people. When I have written something that could not be written by someone else, then you will know me.
And that is why I am better than you.
lol no I don't really believe that. But still, don't expect me to be impressed by the fact that you can follow a recipe. You guys have skills, stop wasting them on cookie-cutter shit.
I guess reasons like these is why there aren't any good new bands nowdays, everyone is busy careerwise and noone is playing just to enjoy playing music and sharing it with other people. Excuse my bitchyness, i just hate what money does to people.
You can say we are wasting our skills, but we are actually writing what we like. Exotype is my favorite band because I write everything I'd want to hear from a band. A combination of my influences. Some can say that this is cookie cutter, that may be true but that's what we like. We are just lucky enough that a huge label and almost 100k fans agree with us.
Steve, it's cool to see a real successful musician still posting ama's on a place like /b/ .. I know your band members are asleep but if you could, check out my band sometime. Its a 2peice but we're trying to break into the scene. Also, its all been recorded by us.
If you like what you hear.. keep our name in mind. If you ever play a show near LA (california) and need an opening band to fill in.. hit us up!
Hey Man i was just wondering if it was possible to be able to part of warped tour or something like that as someone who works setting up and helping out? i really want to but i just don't know how to get those opportunities because i live in australia
ok I'm gonna fuck off and play some Skyrim. don't take anything I said too seriously, I honestly would have said the same sort of shit to anyone posting here just for the sake of making a general appeal for people to raise their ambitions, because that is just how I roll.
It depends on what position or slot we are playing on the tour. We can make anywhere from 250 dollars a night all the way up to a few thousand. There are bands on rise pulling 50k a night in guaruntees
I learned by being a cringeworthy beta and singing and screaming in my car while delivering pizzas at papa johns. Not that pizza bros are cringe worthy or beta, I just know I was.
So what age did you start trying to get serious and giving it a go vocally? I'm 20 now and my actual singing is shit but screams are decent enough.
Oh dude also, anyone in your band listen to lletlive?
You coming to cali anytime soon? Also ever heard of alternative music? 2008 called they want their everything back scene kid
That was closer to my taste but still not quite what I want in my music. I need more guitar work. This felt like Emmure.
Also the rap parts kinda kill it for me. I listened too much Linkin Park as a kid I guess.
Good luck though, I'll give the whole album a listen some time.
Good OP. Delivering and shit.
All the best to you, hope you gain something from this.
I sure will find youtube and listen for a bit, eventhough I am sure it's not my kind of music. getting back to you in a few minutes for a question.
Whelp. Solid thread, thanks to all involved. If anyone feels so inclined, I'd like to keep it. If anyone can cap it somehow and send to steve.selekta at geemayle that'd be rad. Love you guys, come holler at me when I play your hometown!
Yes.don't release subpar or not industry standard quality stuff. Spend the money, don't cut corners. Be pro at all times and make sure you always deliver for your fans. Write using your influences and have fun. When you tour, keep all belongings that are valuable on your person. Conquer your hometown and never expect a handout.
