That trick is quite good, ive used it i a few situations. but it kind of only works on numbers near 100. i mean if you were to try this on like
72*76, you have to know what 28*24 is in head, so then its kinda contraproductive, sice there is also en easy way to calculate 11*11 to 19*19.
this trick is only necessary up to the difference on the highest multiplication you know in head.
if you by a second can do 28*24, then you ofcourse hav a wider range.
so what i should say is, that this works up to the range if small multiplying you know.

if you know 1*1 to 20*20 then the range is 80*80 to 120*120.
what i also suggest is to cover 1*1 to 20*20, 30*30 to 70*70 and the trick you mentioned.
Still there are some combinations left , but i covers much more than the averge person knows.
