I think some of them are "normal" (like everybody else) and they just like the style. Some are a bit into this reggae and hippie culture (which is cool if it's only a bit). I've had dreadlocks for the past 4 years, they were something I wanted from an early age, I'm 26 now.
Yes, you get a lot of stigma from ignorant folk who think they can't be washed etc but that doesn't bother me, if I couldn't hack the criticism I wouldn't have them.
I work 60+ hours a week in construction so it's not as if I'm a "jobless hippie", I'm far from it. To be honest I couldn't give a flying fuck what anyone else thinks because it's my hair.
