I'm on book 4 now. its pretty meh. The cons are he spends too much time explaining what people are eating, then what they are wearing (even unimportant characters). and the sex scenes are written like a pubescent 12 year old boy. He is not a very good writer but an ok story teller and when you have a lot of down time they are pretty good to kill the time. Book 3 was my favorite followed by 1. But 4 is really boring so far and i am 1/3 of the way thru
>>
>>562347551
Did you read the others in the series?
I read the first 7, then stopped. My favorite was Xenocide, and my least was The Speaker for the Dead.

I also read The Tales of Alvin Maker by Card, but after that, I couldn't read more of him. It was more noticeable in the Ender series, but I got sick of his politics/religious shit.

Plot of The Road:
There's this road.
And this father. And his son. And they're walking down the road. and a bunch of evil shit is going on in the background. And the road doesn't end. Ever. And there's a bunch of pseudo-horrible shit that occurs, such as an unimaginative person might come up with in post-apocalyptic world if they had zero access to /b/.

Pretty much everything this guy ever wrote. He's known as the Godfather of "pulp fiction."

Check out Pop 2108 too and of course The Grifters.

At the end of From Dusk Till Dawn (the original film), the place where Seth is headed, El Rey, this is the guy who invented it and in The Getaway, he describes exactly what El Rey is. It might give some new perspective to those who have only seen the film.

Enjoy.

>>
>>562341429

Tokien was long-winded i.e. writing out the stupid songs in Lord of the Rings instead of just writing "and so such and such sang a song"..no he had to dedicate a whole fucking chapter to that shitty song. He was no song writer, I can tell you that much. Plus his characters were fricking weird improved greatly in the films i.e. the oliphants (oh look it's an elephant with an "o") oe the ents stupid walking trees the movies did their best to include in the film but left a lot of people scratching their heads whether Tolkien was on drugs at the time. And worst of all...fucking stupid Tom Bombadil weirdo character too weird in fact to be included in the film though he was a big part in the book.

What the fuck.

(So when I said 'first and last books', I meant books #6 & #7)

Although, according to wikipedia, "He has publicly hinted that the series might be stretched to an eighth volume". No source link for that, though..

It was originally going to be a trilogy, but he wrote too much and went into too much detail, etc.

Here's to hoping he lives long enough to finish the 7th (and possibly eighth) book.

This is a great book
Conrad's short stories are great too.
Especially An Outpost of Progress:

"Few men realize that their life, the very essence of their character, their capabilities and their audacities, are only the expression of their belief in the safety of their surroundings. The courage, the composure, the confidence; the emotions and principles; every great and every insignificant thought belongs not to the individual but to the crowd: to the crowd that believes blindly in the irresistible force of its institutions and of its morals, in the power of its police and of its opinion."

>>562356765 Hogg is a novel by Samuel R. Delany, often described as pornographic.[1] It was written in San Francisco in 1969 and completed just days before the Stonewall Riots in New York City. A further draft was completed in 1973 in London. At the time it was written, no one would publish it due to its graphic and copious descriptions of murder, child molestation, incest, coprophilia, coprophagia, urolagnia, anal-oral contact, necrophilia and rape.

I wouldn't say god tier, but these are series' that I enjoy.

Wheel of Time
A Song of Ice and Fire
A Stormlight Archive
The Lost Sword/Sword series + Empire of the East (I read this A LONG time ago)
The Kingkiller Chronicles
Lightbringer series
the Gone novels

Anyway, yeah, so the Gone novel aren't the highest class books, but I enjoyed them. And I haven't read Fred Saberhagen's Sword books in a long time, but I remember them being good.

The Hobbit by JRR Tolkien (and his other books)
The Silver Pigs by Lindsey Davis (first in series)
Roman Blood by Steven Saylor (first in series)
Frankenstein by Mary Shelly
Dracula by Bram Stroker
The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde
Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice (first in series)

Irvine Welsh? One trick pony much? Should have stopped at Trainspotting.
Cormac McCarthy’s The Road? Still no one can explain to me how in a post-apocalyptic world a female can be fertile enough (without any nutrition) to give birth to a child that can then be eaten in a cannibalistic fashion. Talk about spectacle much...

Existentialism and Human Emotions Jean-Paul Sartre

These are some pretty good books. Some are hard to understand. People that I've spoken to rarely understand Nietzsche, or at least interpreted his work in a very different way than I have. The First Law trilogy and associated standalone books by Joe Abercrombie for some great fantasy with imperfect characters and a friggin awesome story.
Living Hell by Catherine Jinks for a short, bizarre, and generally just fun sci-fi horror with an awesome concept.
Music of the Spheres by Jamie James for more educational/thought provoking reading.
Tyranny of the Night by Glen Cook for a hugely detailed and immersive fantasy, higher level reading but still fantasy.
John Dies At The End by David Wong for /b/ embodied in scribbles on a page. Just read it. Hail Korrok. Read This Book Is Full Of Spiders too.
