Somewhat. But the songwriting and melody should overwhelm it. Let's compare two great Progressive bands Tool and Dream Theater

Dream Theater has amazing technical ability for each individual instrument. Each player (from Petrucci to Portnoy) each showcase their own ability to play fast, technically, and very random (scale wise, out of the ordinary notes and drum patterns etc.)

Tool has an amazing technical ability as a whole. Contributed with polyrhythms and rhythmic technicality as a whole. Adam Jones himself has a simplistic guitar style, nowhere near on par to Petrucci. The bass also follows suit to the simplistic style of Jones, but Danny Carey compensates for extremely complex drums. Overall there is a complex songwriting theme, but not an individual complex style.

Which band would you take to listen to for hours on end? Personally, I would pick Tool for the overall songwriting ability of the band. DT are astounding technical players and musicians, but they try to incorporate too much of their technicality into their songs.

Any of you guys got any advice for a beginner?

Well I say beginner I've been playing 5 months I know 18 songs already and I practice 4 hours a day. Am I doing it right? I have a list of songs I have to get done by the end of summer and the last song on the list is Holy Wars by Megadeth, do you guys think I can pull it off? I'll be attempting it 9 weeks from now, I practice down picking all the time. So for example if I'm watching a youtube video or anime or something I'll be practicing at a steady tempo. Also have any of you tried out Rocksmith I've taken up the 60 day challenge on that too and I'm getting regular lessons from a guitar teacher.

We're not talking about his vocals. But his cleans are amazing and (imo) I like to hear them more than the growls, even dating back to BWP and Deliverance. But switching between the growls and cleans are still amazing.

Mediocre leads? How? He isn't playing fast, I know, but he can incorporate an insane amount of sounds and feel into his lead, including the acoustic. More of a proficient riff-writer and rhythm player, but his leads are more than mediocre.

I own almost all of their albums, I know Still Life from cover to cover on 2 instruments. I spent thousands of dollars trying to nail their guitar tones. I've seen them in concert SIX times. I've met Peter and Martin Lopez, I've met Mikael walking down the street in Portland, OR when literally nobody else recognized him.

I have a right to my opinion, which is pretty well founded.

Great band but Mikael is horribly overrated as a vocalist and is really a mediocre lead guitar player. He writes good music, especially his acoustic stuff, but he's not a 'god tier' guitarist nor is he even close to god tier on vocals.

Another god-tier guitarist, one of the best I've ever seen live, nailed the shit out of every solo he played.
