Any Bulgarians on here? My GF wants me to go there to meet her

half bulgarian here, im guessing your not from europe? and no its 2rd world country. bulgarians are usually very friendly espcially if u bring them strong booze, give them sweets that are uniqe to your location and some yop notch booze and it will be fine

I'm bulgarian. Yes it is a solid 5/10 on the shittyness scale while for example afghanistan is 10/10 and USA 1/10. It depends on where you live. Life in the bigger cities like Sofia, Plovdiv, Burgas, Varna and more.. is pretty good if you have even a half decent job. But smaller towns and villages are not so good. I live in Panagyurishte, it's nice as a town, it's not giant but pretty rich (copper mining company near the town funds alot of shit.) I just don't like the people here. Dont you worry about the presents, trust me....we take everything that has thought put to it. Most slavic countries are not so good, we're one of the slightly better ones.

We went skiing there this winter (a place called Bansko). We live in northern England.

If you're from Western Europe or the US, it is a bit of a shock. We had a great time; the people were friendly, food was great, drinks were cheap. Full-on good times all round.

It's stuff like the state the roads are in, the insane driving (like you see in all those Russian dash cam gifs), and the levels of poverty a lot of people appear to be living in. It's still got a long way to come to shake off the communist legacy.

No idea what to get for a present, but if you go with an open mind, some Lev, and optimism, you'll have a good time.

i have a question for any bulgarians in this thread. my stepmom came to the us from zlatitsa and she always makes a pastry called Easter bread for Easter. Is it really a big thing there? Do you guys really buy feta cheese by the hugeass block and use a lot of yogurt in your cuisine?
Also: Is English spoken widely there in this day and age? I'd love to go there to meet my stepmom's family but it'd be pretty cool to speak to someone there who knows English and isn't related to me.

They're really bulgarian not romanian, have seen her bulgarian passsport and her dads birth documents. he came here during communist times.
Her grandparents live in plovdiv so is suppose it's not going to be too bad there but we will also visit some relatives in a more rural area (farmers).

About the background, thats a part of Banskos legacy actually, 20 years ago there were just a few houses around there, after they built the ski resorts and such everybody started investing in hotels and property, then the 2001 bubble bursted and now everything is as you see it.

Last year I was working in a big kitchen because I was broke.
Of the workers there two people were from Bulgaria. The guy was like in my age (20 something, he said he was stuying something but I forgot), the woman was older. They guy was very friendly and spoke good english. I'd go work there again if I knew he was there too. Good guy, I hope he does well.
The woman, well, she was not so friendly and I don't like chain smokers. She quit after 3 weeks.

There is quite a lot of faggotry here. Bulgaria is not third world country. We wouldn't have been in the EU if we were. But we are neither 1st world. Our roads are awfull, if you are going to drive get something that can handle holes. Most drivers are assholes too. Sofia, Varna, Plovdiv are decent enough to live(booze, internet and women are all cheap and of decent quality). As far as crime goes if you don't go in some fucking gypsy neighbourhood you won't get robbed. Don't buy cheap electronics or clothes. Most of them are from china or turkey. We have few niggers but A SHIT TON of gypsies. Police are pretty corrupt so if you get in some trouble try to haggle, but don't be a fag cause they will fuck you up if you act like you do here. Booze is n1 present. Try our special beverage: rakia. Oh and weed is pretty common and cheap here. If your girl is into that stuff you won't have much problems finding some.

I have been to Bulgaria once. It is far from being a third world country; it is pretty rich actually. There are some run-down parts in Bulgarian cities, but as a tourist you usually won't get there, unless by car.

I was in Ruse for two days, not the most beautiful city, but pretty cool. Some dudes promoting a local beer brand in what seems like a PR campaign gave beer to passerbys for free playing music and dancing. Pubs were nice too. If you like to go out, drink beer and have fun, Bulgaria is a good place to be. Landscape is cool as well. Bulgaria is an insider tip in many European countries, because of its beaches and mountains as well as due to a cheap cost of living.

As to the present you could give to her grandparents, why don't you bring some delights from your own country? Such as wine, sweets or dried fruit. Or handcraft your country is popular for. I don't know, if this is the case in Bulgaria as well, but in Romania people are quite happy when you bring them just a pound of some fruit or vegetable, food and things for everyday life.
