The problem is that they're making a 'sequel' about 30 years after the previous movie. This means the characters look fucking retarded (either different or horribly aged) and it fucks the original trilogy.

The prequels didn't harm the originals because they were PREQUELS - they didn't fuck with the ending. Episode VI had a very obvious ending that screamed "The story has finished and they lived happily ever after" and now Episode VII's gonna shit all over that.

It's also directed by JJ Abrams, so be prepared for a shit ton of lens flares.

Everyone thinks that the original trilogy is amazing but it's origins are just a rip off of Kurasawa's Hidden Fortress

Lucas didn't even know what he was doing, he's admitted he was just making it up as he went along. Originally there were no plans to make Darth Vader Luke's father, no plans for Leia and Luke to be siblings (that's why they make out in the second one kek) He just lucked out and accidentally was involved in one of the best trilogies ever.

They're great films, but total flukes and it's not surprising that everything else Lucas has done is shitty (with the exception of American Graffiti which was OK, but not exactly a tough film to pull off)

The new films will be pretty good, that's all. But I'm happy to hear the guy writing the script for the new one co-wrote Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi.

Disney is smart enough to know just how bad the prequels were and that it's better to move forward rather than fuck with the original series at this time.

They are not gonna use the Legacy of the Force story line or any story line from a novel/comic or video game. They are gonna make their own story, that's why Chewbacca is not dead in Episode VII. IMO that's just great, because now we have no idea where they are going with the story.

my episode 7 story:
recluse of new jedi order lives as hermit. was last to be trained by luke before he died. Disillusioned by organized jedi, chooses to train himself alone in the distant reaches of the galaxy. He is about 60. One day a vessel crashes on his planet. He sets out to the crash site. On board all but one of crew area dead. They are pirates. On board discovers cargo was very young alien child. Last crew member dies and he takes the child with him. Meanwhile the new leaders of the republic assemble an elite commando unit to be assembled and send them to far reaches of galaxy. They are trained in basic force techniques but are mainly military akin to elite storm troopers.
Back on planet the jedi can sense something that both fascinates him about the child but also causes fear. Decides to bring it to an outpost on far side of planet. There it is a mining colony and they pass through one site populated by convicts. One uses the opportunity to escape and later appears threatening to kill the pair if the jedi does not help him escape the planet. The jedi, amused invites him to join them. The convict was a freighter pilot before being sent to the mines for killing a wookie after an argument. The wookie was the child of a prominent diplomat in the senate.

Star wars was an adventure universe to begin with, it never was a rule based universe. Saga was Luke's space adventure. Prequels failed because they tried to be a rule based universe story rather than an adventure. Like; dooku being level 80 Sith vs. yoda being level 85 jedi with PVP gear.
In an adventure universe storyline is the key element, and characters are the core of a good storyline, Lucas failed at both. So it become a "some cool CGI action scenes" + "buy toys Lucas needs money" movie.
So Star Wars having a retcon is irrelevant. It is more about individual adventure stories(Zayne-Kotor comics, Tau-Dawn of Jedi series, Revan- Kotor series, Rouge Squadron series, Han's adventures), all good SW stories are centered around certain characters(one usually with supporting chars).

Yeah, i think what you want to say is that he tried to explain everything and th force through science. The force is genetic and you can mesure it and the amount of mitochondrials in your cells or whatever. I think this really spoilt everything because the force should have stayed mystical, unexplainable. But this is the problem of creating a universe around the main idea, that you can sell. You need to expand the universe which means ruining it, i guess.

Expending a universe doesnt necessarily means ruining it, but when you have thousands of writers writing thousands of stories with no cooperation whatsoever... well you get christianity.
That's why many rule based universes are more consistent because they have a single writer(Middle Earth, Dune, Isaac's stuff).
In an adventure story you create the rules to accomodate the storyline, Force just developped as the story went. Obi's shout -> Obi's mind trick -> seeing drone -> use the force luke -> pulling lightsaber from ice -> ghost obi -> ... -> lightning.
I dont blame games for giving names to Force powers but Lucas thought that he is good at writing a universe story, prequals have dozens of characters that dont do anything, they have no character or emotion to impact the storyline(which is the core). What did panaka do in Phantom Menace? nothing, he is supposed to be this cool veteran nigger who can kick ass but he literally just talks , stands and shoots at a window.
People hate ewoks because theyre space teddy bears but they have this "private ryan" scene where one teddy gets shot and his friend pulls him then realises he's dead. Nobody is going to get emo over space teddies but they do much more than fucking gungans who doesnt even die.

Star Wars will suck because it's going to become a fan-driven mess instead of a thrilling space opera. JJ is going to consult his Twitter feed more than his actual pool of writers and editors.

They're tossing in old actors to put butts into seats because nobody knows who half the cast is. We'll get the typical Star Wars fanfare and the lightsabers, but without any of the heart the original trilogy had.

The movie will be as follows: A lot of CGI, a ton of blue/green screen sequences, lightsaber battles without any real stakes, cameos from previous Star Wars characters who needed a paycheck, and a hamfisted story that has none of the ambiance of the original trilogy. Oh and we'll get another comic relief cgi character just to sell more toys and backpacks.

Can we just move on from Star Wars and get back to doing the REAL Aliens sequel? You know, the one where all the main characters don't die in the opening credits?

What people don't seem to realize, the disillusioned fans at least, is that making this movie is entirely a business deal for Disney and nothing more.

Lucas didn't just suddenly write some amazing script over the last ten years. Some screenwriter didn't waltz onto Skywalker Ranch and slap down a 200 page space adventure onto George's desk.

This was planned out by Disney. They buy the rights, they use the rights to make money.

This has nothing to do with "we have a Star Wars story just waiting to be told", yet has everything to do with "We just bought the rights for this cash cow, let's milk it already."

Less lightsaber waving and more focus in trying to make the force seem like a mysterious great thing, like in the original trilogy.

I thought Lucas had the scripts for episodes 7-9 already planned out when he started working on episodes 1-3, but originally didn't want to have them turned into movies anymore, after all the shit he got as a reaction to the prequels.
whatever the case, I hope they get someone better to direct the last two SW movies, I don't trust J.J. Abrams to deliver even one good sci-fi movie after seeing what he did to Star Trek, let alone three of them.
