Here is the truth of this situation. The guy is underage, and manslaughter is the highest charge he was facing. Had it been murder, he may have been charged as an adult, but since it was manslaughter, even if he were given a 20 year sentence, it would not have been as an adult and wouldn't stick. Thus at the age of 18 (2 years from now) the likelihood would be he is released because he would have been in treatment for those 2 years and there would be no reasonable expectation he was a danger to anyone else. Even juveniles convicted as juveniles for murder can only be held until they are 21. By giving him 10 years of probation, he will be under stringent control and the watchful eye of law enforcement for the duration. That means monthly drug testing and any little slip up will land him in jail for 10 years. Given the likelihood that he would be released at 18 without these restrictions if sentenced as a minor to 20 years and thus only serve 2 years at a country club facility his parents paid for, probation for 10 years that will not disappear as soon as he turns 18 is the bigger punishment in the long run.
