is this a proper fighting stance?

Everything is a proper fighting stance if you know how to use it.
As a beginner you want to protect yourself the whole time (hands tight), if you are better you can open you arms, i.e. to bait the other guy into striking you and to strike faster yourself.

I got it, thanks.
I'm asking because the few times that I've fight in my life I used a fight stance like the one on the pic, and since will smith appeared on a capeshit movie trailer I really thought that it wasn't a good fight stance and the actor just made it to look cool and badass, wich do not work in real life.

1900s style with you fists straight ahead of you.

fuck proper stance

its because most people are familiar with the stance of boxing. even if you've never boxed a day in your life, this is pretty standard, and people decide to imitate this

Which is how you end up with ears like his

That's most likely from wrestling.

No, that is from grappling you turd.

the hand positioning in OP pick looks ore like an old school prize fighting stance then a developed boxing stance.
That being said, someone particularly skilled would be able to use it just as >>892672 stated.
but anyone untrained should not even consider such a poor defence stance.
A basic karate or muay thai hand placement would be far better for the untrained
