Hey /an/,
I'm having the worst time crate training my dog and training out separation anxiety. I've been trying to practice leaving for longer and longer periods of time and reward him when he quiets down, but each time I leave, he just whimpers and yelps louder and louder. I've tried to distract him with a stuffed Kong, but he always pays attention to me when I leave.

Are you doing it when you've tired him out?

I'm calling bs. He looks pretty chill in the pic

Yeah, I did it after our morning walk.

Do more than walking
His energy level is inversely proportional to how easy it'll be to leave him (until he falls asleep)

this.
people also forget to use mental games too. you can be tired out physically but still be bored out of your mind

Do you recommend any puzzle toys or games? He usually does better at night in the crate when he knows I'm in the apartment. I'm gonna try to see if the Kong will work this time.

Try either going through commands learnt a long time ago, and/or teaching new commands. Mix them up and keep him guessing
Related to this, obstacle courses can be good
Most things new and not repetitive will be mentally taxing
Also, don't give your dog all its toys at once. Give him 1 or 2 and change them out.
