I'm thinking about getting a dog. Should I get one from the rescue shelter?
Yes.

you wouldn't buy used underwear, would you?
why would you want a used dog?

Not OP, but my favorite breeds are not commonly found in shelters. I really like big dogs which is funny because I took care of a super small rescue mutt for 17 years of my life. For example, I think I've seen a Great Dane in person once, maybe twice in my life. Am I still Hitler if I go through with buying a puppy from a respected breeder? I really like Irish Wolfhounds because they look like huge versions of my beloved mutt Sasha.

Nah, not at all. To each his own, but I've heard that purebreds often come with health issues. I've never bought from a breeder, though. Have you checked out any rescues that may have the dog you're looking for?
I'm actually looking into getting my first dog. I've always wanted a big dog (or at least a medium sized one), but I've heard they're more expensive. I've had my eye on this 7 year old lab mix at a rescue that everyone seems to be passing over because he's old, but people are advising me to not get it because it's older and vet bills tend to be higher with older dogs.

Wolfhounds have shitty lifespans, get a deerhound instead. Do your research, mate.
