Hey /an/
I have a ten gallon aquarium, and I really want to get a school of about 6 neon tetras to put in it. The problem is that my water is really hard (250ppm), and the lowest pH I've been able to get from it is 7.0 after adding extra pH regulator tablets. Is there a small (1-2in mature size), schooling fish that can survive in hard freshwater, ideally that doesn't require a heater? I was also looking at white cloud mountain minnows, but it looks like they can only live in 200ppm water at most.

Any advice would be appreciated-- thanks!

Rosy red minnows. Don't use ph tablets, they cause a crash.
>>
pH 7 is neutral, not basic. Most (70% or so) of living organisms can chill between 6.5-7.5, but I know jack about tetras.
If the tablets you used were buffers, then anon is right, they could lead to a sudden spike in pH when the fish excrete ammonia which has a high pH.
>>
>>2316281
Oh, thank you! I added a very big chunk of driftwood, and today the pH went down by 0.2 points, to 6.8. The water is brownish so I hope it is the driftwood-- but I'll keep monitoring.

Right now I just have 3 ghost shrimp and 4 snails in the tank. Will I be able to cycle the tank with them inside? I established the tank 24 hours ago.

So I have been having a stray cat come around and hang with me for the past 7 days, every night it comes and rolls around and sits on my lap outside, so yesterday I decide "fuck it" and buy all the supplies I need to take in the stray who I have started to really like. Well of course yesterday is the first time in 7 days she never shows up. Is this just bad luck, and do you think the cat will ever show again? I feel like I was a day late and now the opportunity is gone, any advice?

Probably, unless it's dead. Also how do you even know it's a stray and not an (((outdoor cat)))?

my rabbit's 3rd eyelids have been showing a lot lately

pic related is not her but that's about the same degree as hers. she's a blue eyed white dwarf

i also thought her eyes looked a little buggy but when i picked her up to look at them closely today they looked more normal and when she seemed more comfortable, being petted, her eyelids went back to normal also

>inb4 vet

i'm not against taking her to the vet but she's skittish and susceptible to stress so if it's not something i need to worry about i'd rather leave her alone

Not a rabbit owner but I had a similar issue with my dog. Some days were better than others, and he definitely had swelling and was producing more eye gunk than usual. Vet said that the 3rd eyelid was inflamed (likely due to allergies) and to use artificial tears and gently massage the corners of the eyes to help moisturize and bring down swelling (and make him more comfortable).

It's not a major issue, but it does require some treatment, and in bad cases may require surgery. I'm also not sure how easy it is to use eye drops on a rabbit, or if that's even the issue, so unfortunately the answer is probably vet.
>>
Try saline eye drops. She might have something lodged under it. My old rabbit had something similar and after the eye drops I ended up pulling out a rather large piece of hay.

I kind of dislike how he's always jumping around pointlessly for his intros. His persona is directed towards kids, and he already bailed pretty hard. Not that kids should be in a safe box, but like dude, you're not someone who can do parkour settle the fuck down before you do something retarded again and actually hurt yourself.

Hey /an/, I was out for a bike ride today and spotted these 2 owls hiding behind a piece of sewer pipe. I tried to get closer to get a better picture but they kept flying away, so this is the best I got. Was odd seeing them out in the middle of the day, but it was pretty windy today so I thought maybe it forced them out of their nest?

Anyway I was wondering if you could help me identify them. In southern AZ.

since it's a long story I'll just leave it at, I'm 19 and have to move out of my folk's place and need to take the family dog with me who is a 12 year old pitbull/labrador with medical conditions that they are not willing to deal with. He's stable now but needs daily care (medicated baths, medication, eye ointment, etc) that I know they cannot/are not willing to provide and I've been his caretaker. However I'm also a student and not making a ton of money atm, so the list of apartments I can realistically rent is limited

the apartments I can find that allow pets still have breed restrictions or say under 30 lbs and he is 63 lbs, but if I have the landlord meet him and see that he's just an extremely friendly/laid back blind old dog that spends most of his time sleeping, do you think they would be willing to possibly make an exception? anyone with first hand experience would be great

>nb4 just give him to someone else
I literally can't. My dad is out of town for work 2 weeks at a time, my brothers live in rentals that don't allow any pets at all, my boyfriend lives in an area that bans pitbulls, and none of my friends can take on a dog with as many needs as him. I can't give him to a shelter because I know that they can't realistically place him due to age/breed/medical and he will be put down. All of his vet records say pitbull/mix and that what he's licensed as too

I'm open to any suggestions /an/, and I'm getting desperate. we adopted him at 6 weeks old from the pound, I can't abandon him now. if it helps, I'm located in central oregon.

pic related. him when he was younger with my old lady cat before she died

some are more likely than others but obviously it can't hurt.

also, regarding vet records--contact your vet and see if they'll write a letter for you 1) vouching for his temperament and 2) either downplaying the pitbull stuff or straight up saying "lab mix" instead of pit mix.

a lot of the time, apartments ban pit mixes not because of their personal biases but because of their insurance company. pits are an insurance liability for most of them. push comes to shove, you can see if paying a small extra deposit will sway the landlords' decision. the worst you can get is "I'm sorry, we just can't".
>>
yes. if you come across as a clean, quiet reasonable person and your dog is the same, many landlords will make an exemption for you, especially if you are honest up front
>>

>contact your vet and see if they'll write a letter for you 1) vouching for his temperament and 2) either downplaying the pitbull stuff or straight up saying "lab mix" instead of pit mix.
they have already told me that they can't change his records. maybe it's because I got to a VCA vet? idk. but they all love him there, no matter how much they have to poke or prod him he's been an angel with them. Two of the vets and several vet techs already told me they would be "character witnesses" so to speak

would it be a good idea to call the apartment management and explain this to them before I even apply? or wait until they ask me about him?
