Hey /an/, I don't browse here much, but what is the best way to get rid of ticks?
I've recently been finding a lot of ticks on my German Shepherd and I know its making him and me very uncomfortable. The year before that he got a lot of fleas. I tried some of the regular store medicine, but it only worked for a week or two. Should I get a exterminator to come by or something?
14 posts and 2 images submitted.
>>
Topical flea/tick medicines work by killing the parasite after it bites. The best method to stopping ticks before they bite is environmental control. Your dog is picking them up outside, either in your yard or on walks. Ticks climb up grass and other veg stalks then just wait for an animal to brush by them. If he's getting them in your yard, mow that shit. If he's getting them on walks, stick to paths and do a "tick-check" immediately after so you can get them before they bite- it takes them a while to get through the skin to the fur.

I have a 20 gallon tank with 2 bettas, 2 dwarf honey gouramis, 2 bristlenose plecos, 2 ghost shrimp, 4 corydoras and 2 Java loaches. Is it overcrowded? 20 gallons is a decent size and it's a planted tank with places to hide.

it does not look overcrowded
>>

Thanks my dude.
>>
>>2369031
Tank is okay size. Bioload is what you should worry about. Just because you can shove more fish in doesn't mean you should. Just do some weekly testing and even with plants you're coming out with high nitrates or even a trace of ammonia the load is too high.

Anybody here keep ants? Its something I've considered getting into but am not too sure about, what are some of the things I should know before deciding? Biggest thing is how to control the birth rate and preventing them from escaping.

>>2368301
I used to and at first I thought it would be a funny experience but then became disgusted by the ant clusters formed in some of the holes and threw everything away.
>>
>>2368301
Yeah I do OP.

First you should know that most Ant species really don't explode in their population until they're about 1-2 years old so you really don't get suddenly overwhelmed by them.
But once the colony gets big Ants eat A LOT. You can try controlling their population by feeding less proteins but that will just incite them to try and escape.

Also if you're American you're SOL since you'll have to catch a Queen yourself and also build their enclosure yourself. As far as I know shipping Ants is illegal in the US.

If you're European/Russian/Asian or Australian though I can give you a few links where you can order Formicariums and Ants.

Well I could write some huge guides here but just watch these vids that should give you a quick rundown on Ant Keeping.

I'd recommend Camponotus spp. They're slow growing and too large to make good escape artists (by ant standards). They're fairly hardy once they get going, but they're a bit fragile in the founding stage. I'd recommend catching a few queens to make sure you end up with at least one viable colony. If you're in the northern hemisphere, this is about the time of year they're flying. Wait for a 75°+ day, preferably a humid one, and go to a lightly wooded area. Starting flipping rocks and logs. You're bound to come across at least one queen.

The P. metallica slings I got have finally started to eat, thank god.

I know I shouldn't be worried, I only got them a week ago but they were kinda slim looking and from what I've seen they haven't webbed anything up yet, but I'm still relieved, even if they weren't that expensive.

Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

9 months ago I adopted a 4 year old indoor cat. He was toilet trained and until recently hasn't been a problem, but lately he's been shitting on the floor about a foot away from his litter box (every time he shits).

I've tried various types of litter boxes, litters and even tried letting him shit outside since it started, but it didn't help.

His box is kept clean, and he's never pee'd anywhere outside of the litter box. I'm just not sure what to do.

Take him to the vet.

Generally, when your cat starts peeing/crapping in odd places consistently, something is wrong.

I had a cat that was acting perfectly fine all respects except she started randomly peeing in one spot of the house. Took her in on that oddity alone and the vet found a bladder infection.

Dog bit my hand when I try to put on the mouth set in preparation of giving him some eye drops. He has been having pinky eyes and inflammation.

This is the second time that he seriously bites me (penetrates the skin and draws blood). He has very few temper issues and has been a good family dog otherwise.

He has been with us for almost 10 years. However, we didn't raise him and I heard stories that the previous owner did kind of abuse him(abandoning, hitting, etc.)

Nevertheless, now that this have come to this, what should I do? Should I have him put down( I am not seriously considering that) ?

cats are desert animals, dont forget that

just leave water out, dont leave all the windows completely shut and you'll all be fine. A few ice cubes in the water bowl wont go amiss though

Whatever you would do to keep yourself cool will work for the cat.

Also, feed more wet than dry food. If your cat doesn't drink often (most cats are that way) this will help immensely.

Altitude and humidity? My cat got crystals when we moved to a dry place 2k meters above sea level because we we foolish with his water and food intake.
