Post insect pets, finds, likings, etc.
Millipedes, sow bugs, pill bugs, tarantulas, spiders, etc also accepted.
To all those who also absolutely love this science, go apeshit.

Bonus points if you share specimen trap or preservation ideas

Yes?

That's part of being interested in inverts too. If you're interested you can build a collection of local species and if they're your pets you can preserve them.

are veterinarians real doctors?
27 posts and 7 images submitted.
>>
They're supposed to have a PhD, so yes.
>>
it's a respectable career if that's what ur asking, easier to have a patient that can tell you what is wrong, from personal experience animals can be worse than children to deal with
>>
>Human doctor
-only deals with one species
-within that species, usually deals with one area of its body\system
-Patients can describe their symptoms and are usually easy to handle
>Veterinarian
-has to treat several different species, sometimes even different classes
-often deals with all bodily systems of those animals
-patients can't describe symptoms, often try to hide pain as an evolutionary trait, and often are very hard to handle

you tell me OP

My cousin's dog has recently developed these lesions along his back. It started as a small one near the top of his neck that looked very muck like he accidentally got caught on a barbed wire fence. Not unusual out here surrounded by horse property.
Then it started to spread. We weren't sure what it was. The vet recommended he use some vinegar to kill any infections, so he did. For a while it seemed to be receding, but then it got much worse.

We have a vet appointment tomorrow morning, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone recognized what this is. To me it looks like some kind of chemical burn, but I can't imagine what he may have gotten into to cause it. All of our chemicals are locked in a shop.

usually the definition of "my first dog" also includes "I live alone" "I live in a tiny rented apartment" and "I work for 9 hours and the dog is alone for the total of 12 hours" and such so your thread is a bit braindead. How active are you? Do you have a family? etc
>>

this

work at a pet store, it's amazing how many dog owners completely neglect their animal all day and wonder why it's tearing up their house or chewing its own skin bloody or acting aggressive and neurotic over nothing and why they can't take it out in public because it acts like a spazoid who jumps on everyone and wants to attack other dogs. having a dog is a big responsibility you should not take on unless you are prepared

"How are your fish today?" edition
Old Thread: >>2412956

Discuss anything aquarium related here, including inhabitants, decor and issues.

Google is your friend.
Feel free to ask questions but know that there are a lot of resources out there that could answer your question a lot faster and accurately than /an/.

Make sure to include these things in your post before asking because we can't help you if we don't have the full picture:
-tank size (include dimensions, not just volume)
-parameters (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, pH, GH, KH)
-any and all inhabitants + how long you've had them

so i just got gifted a fish bowl with two small guppies and live plants. i think it's about 4 litres (1gal). it doesn't have a light, heater or a filter. i don't have any experience in keeping fish but i know bowls aren't ideal. should i invest in a bigger tank right away or is there a way to make the fish comfortable in the bowl? should i definitely buy some kind of filter? what else do i need? i haven't tested the water yet.

What organization is genuinely pro animal? If I wanted to leave all my inheritance for animals, what should I donate to?
30 posts and 1 images submitted.
>>
>>2416385
None, if you have a large enough sum just create your own organization

If find a humane society that follows your values the closest, contrary to popular belief most humane societies are not associated with each other and as such sum can be no kill or low kill and some charge for intake and some dont

Just donate to your local rehab center. I'm sure they'll be able to do more, considering the big animal activism groups are in general pieces of shit (see PETA) and the smaller ones probably won't be able to do anything regardless.

I just borrowed the terminology of other similar threads. It's not really in my character to lump people into big groups, I'm just wondering if the culture associated with caring for animals on this board extended to not killing them and eating them. I'll update when I'm dead

I'm a vegetarian.

IDGAF what kind of diet anyone else eats as long as they're not preachy about it or fucking up the environment.
