OK say I had a dog and it was dying of acute liver failure, and the only way to save it was to get the dog another new liver. Luckily however another local dog has died from some retarded head injury but has a new perfectly healthy liver.

Given the opportunity to save this dog, would it be possible/ethical to attempt the surgery and do science to try and save the dogs life without having the dog have to take rejection drugs?

I could easily see this kind of research providing great data for saving human lives by using animals as a test bed, I mean if you figure the dog was going to die anyway, why not try to give it another 3-6 months while also providing research for scientists?

we already know how to transplant livers, and drugs are necessary every time. Even if you found some magical match that doesn't require drugs it would take billions of attempts and we wouldn't be able to repeat the success.

so no, you're retarded.
>>
>>2432525
no thats not the question Yes we know how to transplant livers, but would it be possible to try new anti rejection drugs or an anti rejection injection that would prevent the new liver from dying on animals like cats and dogs?
>>
>>2432531
do you have new anti-rejection drugs or are you going to just inject random substances until you find something that works?

Can someone explain
>What makes animals able and unable to breed with each other?

>How different/how long separated from one species do they need to be considered a new species rather than a sub-species?

>What decides between positive heterosis and negative heterosis?

I have two fantasy species that are the main progenitors of another species. The first two are extinct now but while I don't need it to be 100% scientifically accurate I'd like to expand on their genetics on how the newer species came to be.

Species A fucked themselves over from favoring vanity and starting using species B in an attempt to revive themselves.
I imagine they had problems with sterility, growth dysplasia, autoimmune disorders, etc at least in the beginning. Maybe still so. I haven't decided how long the progenitor breeding went on or how long the newer species has been around.

Pic related, a goat-sheep hybrid and not a chimera. I can't go the chimera route as it would only pass on one or the other's genes.

Would also appreciate links if you don't want to dumb it down for me.

Here's Motty, an african/asian elephant hybrid who unfortunately did not survive long. I bring these up because they're way more different from one another than say, a coyote and wolf.

The simplest way I can explain it is that all DNA has a security system to protect itself. If any DNA doesn't have the right "password" so to speak it gets rejected by the recipient host.

Well those growths on top of their bills make me think of Muscovy.

Does anyone else have issues when walking their dog?
>Weather is getting good where I live
>Decide to start walking/jogging
>Thought it be a good idea to bring dog with me
>Walk for like 5 mins (sometimes not even a few blocks) and she'll just stop and refuse to go any further
>This has happened the last 3 times I've tried to take the dog with me

What could be the cause of this? I'm guessing something is spooking her? How would I go about stopping this? pic related she's a Yorkie if that means anything

maybe she doesn't need that much exercise. do you drag her or let her walk at her own pace?
>>
How old is she?
>>
>>2432305
According to her previous owner, she's two years. Used to belong to our Aunt but she couldn't look after her after moving house. Her first owners were rough travelers who've from what I've heard: didn't treat her too well. Prob should of mentioned that in the original post.

>>2432271
She often stops to sniff things. For the most part I let her do this. I'll tug if she takes a long time (she can spend ages sniffing) but I won't drag her. Maybe it would be best then to just go walking myself? Kinda feel bad for leaving the dog at the house but I feel I won't get any decent exercise myself if I keep bringing her.

You obviously know nothing about mushrooms if you think that could be an oyster mushroom. I don't know why you would pick that. It's definitely not active (psilocybe), and it's probably not even edible. If you still really really want to know, then do a spore print and report back.

Or you can save everyone's time and just toss it.

Sup. My dumbass sister left a 250g packet of mint humbugs (pic related) on the counter and when we went out my dog ate the lot, including most of the plastic wrappers it seems.

Here's a list of ingredients:

Glucose Syrup
Sugar
Invert Sugar Syrup
Sweetened Condensed Skimmed Milk
Palm Oil
Plain Caramel Colouring
Butter Oil
Flavourings
Salt
Lecithins Emulsifier (Soya)

Will she be okay? She's a medium sized, staffordshire bull terrier. Don't know how much she weighs.

Googled some stuff and can't find anything that is overly harmful except from the pure amount she ate, but I thought I'd check with you guys.

haha gross. your dog will probably be okay. there's not anything inherently poisonous in there, just a lot of sugar and fat. feed her a piece of bread or some cooked rice to soak up some of that fat. she'll have diarrhea most likely.

monitor her well for the next 24 hours. she might throw up. make sure she's hydrated. if diarrhea continues for more than a day or she becomes lethargic, then go to the vet.

also probably you should give your sister a good box on the ear

Hello /an/

I am looking for advice on my dog's diet.

So short story, I took my dog to the vet today for a medical checkup (she had an excessive thirst and urination problem earlier this year, related to the liver). He did the blood test, told me everything was fine, etc.

At the end of the session I asked him for advice, I told him that I had been one of those foolish owners who would only fed his dog chicken breast and wanted to try one of these premium dog foods that are more balanced and overall better for my dog nutritional needs. He took me to the veterinary shop and gave me a "Royal Canin Veterinary Diet Gastrointestinal", then said good bye.

I would appreciate a second opinion because the guy from the reception in this veterinary had a Royal Canin branded T-shirt and I think that was the only brand they had in their shop too. Also, this seems to be food for sick dogs, so I don't really feel good with the idea of giving this to my 10 year old dog for the rest of her life.

>tl;dr I have been feeding my dog a sub-par homemade diet and would like recommendation on high quality dog food.

>>
Hard to say, a lot of the more premium foods vary locally.

Go to a specialty pet store or feed store, they tend to have better options. A few things to look for: High animal protein, no grains, no preservatives, no flavors, some form of starch for carbs. I'm not going to research that brand for you, but it's probably better than feeding it KFC.
>>
>>2431564
You can just feed a balanced home made meal ya know. Royal canin and science diet are shit. They are like a few steps above gravy train and kibble and bits
>>
If you have seventy-five hours, do some googling on your dogs issues and check reviews on chewy. Some dogs it takes several bags to dial it in.
I look for no "by-products", high fat and protein because high activity, and no corn. It ain't cheep, but coat, stools, energy, and overall health are the payoff.
You are right about the vets getting $$$ for the brand recommendations.
Vets usually get sold on food brands while in vet school when the (((food distributors))) give the school a donation and to get their shilling hooks into the debt laden little vetlets.
Think pharmaceutical industry. And don't do a fast change, switch food gradually, mixing new with old over several days.

The grey wolf has made its way into Denmark and has even been spotted with cubs.

Now there's a huge debate whether or not they're dangerous for humans and if they should be eradicated.

So, are they really dangerous for humans?

>>
As a keystone species they are more important to the environment than they are a threat to humans
>>
Not really.
My Danish friend says Denmark is probably one of the safest countries ever. I'm not sure if they even have any dangerous spiders or snakes.

They seem like cool people so I would hope they are cool with it. From what I'm told it seems that they could use a little spice.

Wolves in general stay away from humans as much as they can. I get more worried about coyotes than I do wolves, bears or mountain lions. Fuck coyotes.

I'm trying to look up the Denmark wolves but there's not a lot of public opinion on it from Danes.

my rats have all passed on and i miss them, but i dont want to get more because of how short their lives are. the longest i've had a rat live is 4 years and that's still so short compared to a dog. is there any hope of rats living longer lives and being less prone to illness?

Lots of similar research on extending lifespan, mostly in mice, but about all you can do reasonably is calorie restriction and chromium supplementation. Maybe resveratrol.

Short answer: no.

The problem is picture related, rats have ridiculously extensive mammary tissue, which essentially makes them tumour factories.

Four is pretty awesome for a rat. I was in the same boat as you OP- and wind up getting a dog once I was ready instead.
>>
>>2430704
Tumors in males seem relatively uncommon compared to females. I've never had a male rat with a mammary tumor and in two decades of owning rats I've only had one male rat who developed any tumors. Unfortunately the tumor he developed so embedded into his chest that it was growing on the outside and inside and as soon as they opened him up it was deemed inoperable, and most likely malignant. Didn't do any tests on the tumor itself but the vet said it didn't look or feel like the mammary tumors she had dealt with. Very stiff and firm.

My oldest was five.
I think eventually you could get 5-6 years with improved breeding but wild ones don't live very longer either. I've read from people who have kept wild rats and wild rat mixes that putting them in their lines did not improve anything, and in fact made them more vulnerable to disease and tumors and that wild rats were built to 'live fast and die' compared to domesticated rats who grow 'slower'.

I've also read that a protein restricted diet can help extend their life and I believe it. When I first had rats in the beginning the internet wasn't really a thing yet and any commercial rat food was pretty shitty, as well as I fed them table scraps often. I noticed the males I had who got more developed skin problems(itchy skin, greasy fur) and grew bigger and faster, and developed issues earlier. Once I realized it was the food I cut back and they went back to normal. I remember reading something about this a few years ago but I can't find much on it.

I get a pair of rats every few years if I see some that really need homes but my heart hasn't been in it for years to put as much as I used to in it. I have dogs too but rats brought something extra to the table.

It's the fucking poppies. You can't have them near an animal and the essence is the most commonly used in any sort of perfume. How better to make someone retarded and kill him at the same time? I guarantee this guy just smeared his dog with something that can kill it.
