I think you did the right thing. I had upstairs neighbors that would fight all the time. I got sick of it and called the cops they came, talked to them and then left. About a week later they were fighting again and this time I could heat their two young kids crying. I called again and right before they got there she had been pushed down the stairs. She was fine and turns out pregnant with twins at the time and he was arrested. While it's true that some couples just get into screaming matches, it does often escalate to violence.
