Im piercing my septum and I need to know what gauge to pierce

Im piercing my septum and I need to know what gauge to pierce it. I was thinking to do it with a 14g needle but wear a 16g barbell. Or should I just buy 16g needles or will it be a pain to get the jewlery in?

Always pierce a gauge above your jewelry. You want the flesh to heal around the jewelry, if the wound and bar are the same size it's just going to drag and tear through the flesh and irritate the hell out of it. So 14g is pretty standard.
