I think it's a good idea to know about a serious partner's past sex life and experiences. It gives you a better perspective of who they are, who they were, and where they've come from. Some people can't handle that information though, and dwell on the fact that their partner has been with other people and let it drive them insane. So it's kind of a personal thing; you have to know how you'd react to the information. If you don't think you could handle it, don't ask.
