I know how you feel. I worked customer support for 1.5 years. I wanted to fucking shoot myself everyday. When the new school year started, I said fuck it, I'm getting myself a uni degree. Best decision of my life thus far.

Freelancing needs either references or a good portfolio so if he's not gonna switch a job to development the I suggest learning programmig and building a portfolio as he goes.

I went through this and asked myself if I'd rather be mentally or physically exhausted. I dumped the customer service job and got a more physical one. Not perfect, but much happier and more physically fit than I've been in a long time.
