I'm totally new to this site, and I just don't understand the culture of the place, and am completely overwhelmed by whatever the fuck is going on here.

Can /adv/ help a newfag understand 4chan?
>>
What's going on here is nothing of value.
>>
Just leave...
No one needs you to be here.
>>
There is no salvation from the hellish inferno you have entered
>>
Lurk moar

If this is true, get the fuck out now. Seriously, for your own sake. Go and live your life and forget about this place. Run, and don't look back.

Don't take this as an attempt to hide something cool from you, or as a challenge.

Take it at face value because I mean it. Go. Be free. I wish I could follow.
>>
>>16659988
Lurk more. And don't go to places like /pol/ or /r9k/ until you've lurked for a while. You don't know what horror lies in wait.
>>
>>16660073

This.

Also there is a FAQ newfriend
>>
>>16660077
Why do you resent having discovered this place so much?
>>
damn, you guys are pathetic.
the dose makes the poison.
what exactly confuses you?

i think /adv/ is a reasonable nice place.
>>
>>16660155
This place is a hell hole filled with anger, toxic mentalities, a desire to lash out at others. However once you watch and interact with the culture, its like coming home. A very shitty home, but youre used to the people there and when you have nothing better to do talk to them despite how much you hate them.
Please leave to save yourself. I couldnt be saved but if I can save another then that is enough.
>>
>>16660267
You are poet
>>
>>16660145
Seconded, and even when you start browsing those two shit boards, rarely or best never take things read there to heart.
>>
I urge you not to come here at all, heat my warnings or you'll regret it. Say you do realy wan't to join this autismfest, I'd suggest luring more.
>>
Just remember,
bullshit boards like r9k and pol originated by anons who where posting ieonic jokes,
never take anything on the site for truth,
there is a faq,
the Union is not a real newssite, if someone uses it as a source to back their arguments you know they are just trolling,
>>
>>16659988
I can see this is a revived thread, but incase the OP comes back....

I've been browsing here for 8 years now (currently 23), and all I'll say is stick to the blue boards that interest you, and even take those in humor

4chan has molded my sense of humor in a way that is largely incompatible with social situations

1 year leads to the next... And the next
>>
Some boards are fine, like /sp/, /k/, /diy/, /out/ and some more

Try to avoid cesspit shitposting places like /b/, /r9k/, I'd advise staying out of /b/, there's really nothing there, for a "newfag" like you it's dangerous mostly because of shit advice you may fall for and ending up taken to hospital due to poisoning from mustard gas when all you wanted to do was to " blow wicked crystals through a straw"

I used to frequent /b/ since `10 , for 2 years quite often, after that I moved to boards mentioned before, never went back.

I wouldn't recommending this place at all, to be frank, all places on internet are shit, but more mainstream and popular ones like 9gag and reddit are socially acceptable, that's why you must not tell anyone you browse this place, for reasons I probably don't need to tell you. First google searches give out rather unflattering info about the site, and what's more possible those who will have the interest of seeing what you browse so often will surely (and I'm 100% sure of this) stumble upon /b/ , /gif/, /r/ first and see a gore , trap, just usual shitpost thread and you will be fucked

If you have any questions just ask

That's all bullshit and you know it, and so do all the anons who have posted similar shit above. Same thing would be to say that you're addicted to a certain tv show, series, a different internet site you visit at times, youtube for the hell of it
>>
>>16661697
I mostly stick to /o/, /adv/, /tv/, /sp/. Sometimes I go to /pol/ and /x/ for entertainment purposes.

I went to /fit/ to ask about running shoes and cardio in general. I got like 70 replies. About 60 of them were "cardio lol" "u need to lift" "fuck cardio" and I'm sure most of them were just trolling but some were probably serious. Either way it's pretty stupid. I did get a a few people who offered actual advice.

Point is to take everything here with a grain of salt and expect to sift through lots of bullshit to get any legitimate information, advice, or conversation and in the end take it with a grain of salt. The shitposting is funny sometimes though. I'd be lying if I said I didn't do it sometimes.
>>
>>16659988
The only reason to come here vs. anywhere else is the culture. There are plenty of places to get similar types of discussion on the internet, but not many of them include a chance for someone to derail the thread post 1 by telling you to kill yourself, you faggot.

It's exhilarating in a sense, but unless that's specifically what you're looking for you'd best be on your way out.

If you're determined to stay, lurk for like a year before posting anything. If you still can't figure it out, this place is not for you at all.
>>
>>16661714
I remember going to /x/ for the first time and coming to the conclusion that it was entertaining. I had to stop after I found some of the threads with nigh unreadable charts some guy was pretending to read. Promise me a chart describing me or my life somehow and I'm sold, even when you tell me it's literally one hundred percent false.
>>
>>16661665
Listen to this wise man.

Anyway, all you have to do is separate 4chan's opinions and humor from real life's. Otherwise, you'll be a social outcast, rejected by most people. Still, once you get used to the black humour, deep autism and hateful community, you'll always come back for more.

There's usually legit good advice in 4chan. Here and in /fit/, for example.

The beauty of it lies in detecting it through all the pile of shitposting and trolling around.
That is a skill that can be improved through time and dedication, and it developes your instinct, something which involves benefits for real life.
>>
>>16661870
Auto lol.

Too many weebs who worship gtr's and shit japmobiles and hairdressers who drive miatas but there's some cool stuff there sometimes
>>
>>16659988

I have been in this site since 09/10 and I regret it all the time.

I which I could have done something with that time wasted here instead of shitpost with anons.
>>
I'll say this with 100% honesty. I've spent my whole life on the internet but I was imageboard-free until 2012. I was aware of their existence and had visited 4chan a few times but never posted or took the time to familiarize myself with it. Partly because I was overwhelmed like you, partly because it seemed like a waste of time.

Until one day I decided to see what the fuss was about, mostly out of desperation for social engagement as I had no friends and didn't like posting on regular forums because of the profiling aspect, so the platform seemed perfect for me. I guess it was cool for a while, I felt a sense of belonging when I started picking up the customs and could identify with the tfwnogf mentality and everything.

4 years later I wish I never came here.
>>
4chan is filled with a bunch of shit. No one here is concerned with behind "socially acceptable" or right. This amazing place is filled with dark humor that will make you a social out cast anywhere else. If you want advice take everything with a grain of salt (or shaker) and Google stuff if it could be dangerous. Also it helps your performance of you delete system 32 on your comp

>About 60 of them were "cardio lol" "u need to lift" "fuck cardio" and I'm sure most of them were just trolling but some were probably serious. Either way it's pretty stupid.
I remember once asking for some advice about financial aid. A lot of people assumed I was underage and shitposted because I was a dependent. Note that you're considered a dependent until you're 24.

Some people have entirely too much free time.

LURK MORE

Don't browse /b/, /r9k/, /gif/
You'll turn into a pathetic nihilistic racist beta if you do.
>>
>>16662204

I experienced the same.

>Was fully aware of 4chan, but had no reason to go there, so I didn't bother to get involved in it. I thought it would be stupid and boring.
>People I know started visiting it and I sometimes saw them posting in threads whenever I was with them. Still kept my distance as I still thought it was stupid and pointless.
>Eventually visit 4chan for the first time out of curiosity.
>Start posting because I'm such a friendless loser and I like talking to people.
>Got hooked and started frequenting 4chan almost everyday.

I been here for more than 2 years and the more I spend time here, the more bitter I become and feel like my life is going nowhere.

The worst part is that you won't be cured until you find likeminded people to regularly converse with. I've stopped lurking for months but couldn't revert to the mental state I was in pre-4chan because I'd had a taste of what it's like to consort with kindred minds anytime I felt like it. I thought the feeling that something's missing would vanish after a while but it didn't. I've tried to make friends but finding interesting people who find me interesting enough to befriend is so hard.
>>
why would you choose that picture for your op??? You're doing it all wrong
>>
>>16659988
It's constant arguing over extreme viewpoints, most of which are probably trolls. The site is a big waste of time with little value in return. People are usually rude because they are anonymous and don't give a fuck and will bicker incessantly over barely anything while refusing to back down it stop posting, so most threads just degrade into cancer.

Sometimes you'll find something interesting or something that will make you giggle though.

That is this site in a nutshell.
>>
>>16660267
This guy is right. 4chan will turn even the most normal individual into a hateful sexist racist pessimist who will find any reason to judge and hate others. This place has made me into what I am, and what I am is not good in any way. Get out while you can.
>>
>>16660165
Go douche your dried out cunt.

Were /pol/ and /r9k/ actually based off ironic jokes that eventually got taken seriously? I can believe it.

Kek, u guys either exagerate it a fucking lot or you really are true autists
>>
>>16659988
forget you ever found it. once used to it theres no turning back. it's just not good for your attitude and personality. its kind of like a porn addiction, but instead of jerking off, you're wallowing in a cesspool of negativity
>>
>>16662582
No. Most of the 4chan userbase frequents at least one of the two, and there is a small minority of people that like to insist 4chan is a purple-dyed-hair flamboyant paradise.

The reality is most 4channers are pessimistic, bitter, and either apolitical or angered at the current political atmosphere and how it is impossible to be taken seriously if you're not left of centre, politically.

I'll attempt to sum it up:

>-----------------------------------------

4chan's culture runs on ragebait. Arguments, points of view, or fallacies that get people angry. These can be false/ fake, but generally these things are meant to instil rage in as many people reading as possible.

Most of the time, the people posting these opinions don't have to agree with them. It's like a friendship where you try to annoy each other/ set each other off as much as possible, as a way to test boundaries, overcome vulnerabilities/ weaknesses, grow.

For instance, there was a phase where everyone constructively tried to get /fit/. During this period, people found opportunities to make fun of people being /fit/. Like their obsession of the male form and attributing it to homo-erotic tendencies. (ie everyone on /fit/ is gay)

Then as many people started reaching their goals and still failing at the social/ dating game, people caught onto the manlet meme; anyone under 5"10 is too short to be considered attractive. This one thing men can't change about themselves, despite putting in the effort to become /fit/ and care about their bodies, was an instant classic. It instilled rage in almost everyone.

These things come in waves.
More recently was the influx of "femanon here! I'm lonely :(" threads. And now the "/practicegf/" meme, to counter the actual females on here and make them angry/ feel inadequate.

>------------------------------------------

It's crucial to understand that this is all meant to be embraced. The anger, the feels, the horror. It's essentially playing with fire, constantly. No barriers, cut to the most vulnerable part of each other, not being upset when you actually DO get hurt.

There are other reasons but this is the main appeal/ culture of 4chan.
>>
>>16663910
It also helps if you see someone else posting and pretend to be mad.

I feel like all the people here either came here too young or for the wrong reason.

Just don't take anything seriously and you'll have some material to read when you're bored. Some people post some funny shit like the guy who had his sister walk in on him jerking it to her panties.

Also stay of /v/. Most underage board here.
