I think its interesting how sometimes the name is one of the last things decided, and in others its decided really early.

I would like to know how people in here do it. You choose a name early on? You give them the name based on how would it fit the finished character? or you just chose a name that you think sounds cool?

Quickly doodled an OC the other day.

Hey, you said you gave characters from the a certain group names with a shared theme, right? It sounded cool, so I tried to do that with Axe and Arrow but then Jargon happened and it went to shit.
But it is the character's theme that decides. Jargon is named after the Jargon File, which her speech might reflect at times. Mostly I can't reproduce the lingo well enough. Decided recently that Arrow's real name is Claire. Clair de Lune. Lune means moon. Arrow's special attack is "Artemis". Artemis, goddess of the moon. Mind. Blown. (Not really, I just thought it sounded appropriate.)
Then there's Axe, who will never have a name, and is literally called that because he fights with an axe. I'm not too good at this naming thing.

It really depends. Sometimes its very early in the creation, sometimes they stay unnamed for ages, and other times I change their names a thousand times.

I often get a temporary name that is very simple and sort of describe them, like Gabriangela being called Birdy at first, or Poron being called Hare, or Guro being called Guro (I haven't come with something better yet).
Most times I either wait until I decide their ethnic-cultural background and family history to choose something that matches it all, or just go into a baby names site and hit random until I find something I like

I can barely use a tablet...if my scanner was better I wouldn't even bother with it at all...it's hard to draw when you get no physical feedback like when you use paper.

I'm not saying this to be an ass either, you genuinely cannot improve drawing (if lack of skill is the reason why you're just an "idea guy") without actually drawing. I sure as hell haven't been the best two years ago, but taking my skills seriously since the beginning of 2015 lead me to today's standard. I couldn't even draw proper heads about five months ago; but look at pic related. And the surprising thing is that I did all of this shit with a mouse.

If I can do appealing art with such infamous tools, then obviously you can pick up a pencil and progress as time steps foward.
