Nipples are hard to do at first, i'm still getting the hang of it. Search around for refs (both real and made by another artist) and study them. That's how i'm doing it.
Ok so, about the Mermaid: i'm actually writing a novel where there's this species of creatures that are created to kill and replace the human race. They start as monster thingys and then evolve into more human shapes. This way i have an excuse to create monsters AND make monster grills out of them. This one in particular is the final stage of the Krakens, huge ass octopus sharks.

Now that I think about it, I used RPG Girl to test almost every single thing in the game she was from, since she was the first character I made.

And I think her having a simple design and being bizarrely recognizable makes her for an ideal test character.
