You're actually thinking of New Old Lore, Old Old lore had her and poppy as a separate race from yordles entirely called Meglings. The thing is that Riot got lazy and didn't wanna change her title when they unified the two races (partly because there were no female yordles at the time) and just called them "yordles". Megling became the name of Tristana's squad and the name of its founder as she was the only one who had her lore mention the word "Megling".

This is refereed to in the League community as the "Megling genocide".
