The definition of interactive is just "Responds to user commands" Pushing X to kill stuff, and pushing X to advance text have no differences.
Just advancing text is several hundred times more interesting. The prime example I have for this is Boss Battles, it could be the worlds best most gameplay filled fight ever, but I'm not gonna remember it in a week, whereas a glorious well executed battle scene is gonna get my rocks off for months to come. Either way its responding to user commands. Just one of them actually involves remembering it.

A Video Game is just like a book or a movie, A means to tell a story. And just like them it has its own strengths, and I say VNs can definitely display those strengths better than any other Genre can till VR is a true reality.

There are many different types of gamers thasr enjoy different kinds of games. Sure, some love retro challenge and some love souls challenge, but plenty enjoy harvest Moon or the sims or Zelda which are pitifully easy at best and have almost no failure state at worst.

The "dark Souls" style game is a niche, and that specific audience will eat it up, but it's not something that appeals to the entire audience, and aiming a porn game at that audience is likely to hit a genre mismatch.
