It's fucking excellent but sadly underrated, maybe because rakugo isn't all that interesting a premise. But it's doing a god tier job of making it interesting, thanks to competant visual direction. Everything else is great too, the characterization, the music, the emotional build up, I'm really enjoying it.

Episode 9 was the best one yet. Rakugo is, in my eyes, the AOTS. It's so good at everything it does.

Nah, the present day characters are definitely necessary for the narrative to complete itself. The clash between tradition(rakugo) and the quickly changing times is probably the most prevalent theme in the story. It needs the new generation at the end of it to finish that idea up cleanly, which I assume is why it began in the present and moved into a flashback.

It's mostly a character/romance drama, the shouwa era setting makes for good atmosphere and it has a pretty mature feel overall. I guess it could be boring to some, but the idea of rakugo is more boring than the actual execution because the visuals and voice acting are nicely done.

It's entirely possible. He's introverted, but good with people, kind, talented, handsome, and eventually famous. There's basically no reason for him to have never married nor had kids. The fact that he wasn't affectionate with Miyokichi despite admitting to being very fond of her is a pretty huge hint that Bon might be a poopy puffer.
