I always assume every anime girl is average looking unless someone specifically says "Oh my god ____-chan is so attractive, she's like an angel/She's the school beauty/She has both looks and intelligence" or something along those lines.

It makes it a lot easier to understand why these seemingly 10/10 goddesses can get ignored so easily by beta MCs and other males in the background.

I was thinking that. Like in most harem anime, you have the one girk everyone thinks is so beautiful/cool/popular. she is probably 10/10 and all the other girls 7s or 8s.

Writers go out of their way to mention when a girl is considered beautiful.

It's really obnoxious and makes them seem like Mary Sues.

They kind of have to because otherwise they all look about the same. You can miss some plot points and characterization if you don't understand how attractive people are supposed to be.

I guess, but should we default assume girls are average? I mean, harem is most obvious example. Ojou type typically gets all the praise, but should we assume everyone else is beneath her? Akeno for example has everyone falling all over her. But does that mean asia is meh tier, or is it simply her posistion in the school as an unofficial idol?

Been a while since I saw DxD but I'm pretty sure Asia was always treated as average by everyone. I remember most of the other girls getting a lot of praise and admiration from pretty much everyone else.

Also remember that transfer students, ojou-samas and foreigners always get bonuses to their attractiveness due to how "unique" they are.
