Why don't more characters have sex in anime?

In storytelling terms, sex is the endpoint of the relationship. Once it happens, all the tension and intrigue goes straight out of the window. At least most of the time.

You can add more spice via NTR or pregnancy.
>>
The Japanese are afraid/disinterested in sex.

Sauce?

It's bad for teh childrens.

If you want sex you can just watch some porn.
>>
>>138294420
It's not just a Japanese thing. A good example of this is an old TV series from the 80s called Moonlighting starring Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepard as the MCs.

The whole show revolved around their sexual tension, but when they became an item, the show lost its draw.

Paradise Kiss.

It's not porn, or even ecchi.

Still good though.

You know how in the middle of a series, just as the romance is heating up, there's usually an arc where the characters separate? If you just make them have sex before that arc, it should strengthen the drama in the next few episodes instead of destroying the tension.
>>
For relatively younger readers sex is generally a point of no return for characters, meaning it railroads them down a route permanently or makes them a sleazy scumbag like Makoto.
This angers some readers and the series gets canned because nobody is buying it. This is especially true in Japan, with their innate obsession with pure idols and virginity.
Mixing emotional investment and sex is a dicey prospect and sales clearly show that teasing relationships with ALL the girls keeps lots of people interested.
>>
>>138294420
This is the main reason.
The other is that it doesn't happen in most of the source material anime gets adapted from.

Post characters who had consensual sex.

>>138294934
Why are you posting an image of a character who did it with hookers then?
>>
>>138294377
"George" in the end he was a pretty decent dude who didn't want someone railroading their life.

Other dude lost out twice, once to the blonde punk in a different story and to George, silly git.
>>
What does it add to the show?
>>
>>138295131
Because hookers consent to sex if you offer them enough.

What do you define as having sex?
As in characters who have been known to have sexual relationships with other characters or on-screen?
If it's the former you might just need to watch more anime, there's plenty of characters who have been known to fuck, if it's the latter, just watch some porn.
>>
>>138295233
Sometimes it allows the writers to get past the whole song and dance of being in a weirdly static relationship.

At least alluding to it solves that problem.
>>
Touma and Haruki making love was the best
>>
>>138295282
Most sex is endgame for most relationships anon. Adding that would mean the deal is sealed with that character. If they don't have that relationship established already or if the author plans on messing with it.
>>
>>138295334
Not true. That's what made Nana so great (before Ai Yazawa disappeared). You knew the characters were fucking but it made the relationships all the more real and the story more compelling.
>>
>>138295334
And this is why the author should learn to get past that and show two characters in a functioning relationship.

Your last sentence adds why it could still happen, White Album 2 still gives me a bit of a chill because of the tension and angst.

At least a mature acknowledgement that sometimes people in relationships do things. I know the mature part is probably not going to happen.

>>Most sex is endgame for most relationships anon. Adding that would mean the deal is sealed with that character
Not really, because people in relationships have difficulties or break up all the time.

How many people actually get married to their first love?
>>
>>138295334
Wow, my statement is not clear.
Let me fix this.
>>138295387

How does a character just having sexual relationship change anything? I don't see how it affects the story. if it's not centered around that.

Good example would be Naruto, Naruto had the sex but it's still an awful story.
>inb4 Narutard
It was just an example
>>
>>138295282
I like seeing a relationship in more than the linear way of "getting to the point where you fuck"
The extreme focus on this sole act at "the end of the road" doesn't just bore me but also feels like a lack of creativity when it comes to story telling.

If you do want to tell a serious story about a relationship, I'd actually prefer it if sex would be a natural inclusion, one that doesn't get any special time or focus. I feel like it is usually better if you know that a sexual relationship exists and why not? Couples fuck, it's natural and doesn't need highlighting.
>>
>>138295544
It doesn't for Naruto because it's not meant to be a romance/drama. Almost all aspects of romance in Naruto was forced.

I'm pretty sure everyone else is talking about animus where romance is integral to the storyline and how they'd like to see a more organic and realistic depiction of it rather than blue balling every time.
>>
>>138295611
>more organic and realistic depiction of it rather than blue balling every time.
Yeah but most writers aren't capable of that and I think it's retarded to say that the inclusion of sex is going to make it more organic. Simply having MC leave his girlfriend's flat in the morning gets the exact same message across.
It all depends on how well the story and characters are set up in general. Most authors are shit and will quickly fall into very cheap territory. The question is when to show, and when not to show sex.
>>
>>138294377
Because otaku don't have sex.
>>
>>138295834
>Simply having MC leave his girlfriend's flat in the morning
>missing out on the most intimate moment in the relationship up to that point

It really depends on the genre, but for romance and drama this would be pure rage.
>>
>>138295834
That's an unfortunate fact.

I think you misunderstood me a bit. I'm not asking for blatant sex scenes. I'm for alluding to and talking about sex instead of avoiding it like the plague or treating it as "end game". Your example of MC leaving GF's flat in the morning is something that I think a lot of shows could benefit from in terms of portraying relationship growth.
>>
>>138295451
>How many people actually get married to their first love?

Quite a few, they just usually end up divorced not long after.
>>
>>138295834
>Simply having MC leave his girlfriend's flat in the morning gets the exact same message across.

But that is sex. The problem isn't "not showing the sex scenes", it's the characters not having sex at all. Horimiya does this and it works pretty well.
>>
>>138295587
The target audience is frequently creepy otaku who risk flipping out (or at least dropping the show) once their waifu has sex with her love interest.
>>
>>138295886
Not to mention the retarded arguments about whether something actually happened or not.
>couple goes home together and leaves it in the morning
>talks about the great night they had
>T-they just watched TV, guise!
>>
>>138296019
Meh.
>>
>>138294420
>In storytelling terms, sex is the endpoint of the relationship
That's not actually true though - it's only true for bad storytelling by people who have no idea how to work a relationship into a narrative.
>>
>>138296014
Except that it didn't. People still question whether or not they actually did even though it is obvious. It can't really be compared with what is being discussed her and Horimiya kind of fell apart afterwards anyways but that wasn't because they actually fucked.
>>
>>138295041
He had sex with the golf girl too, after he kansai doriftoooo saved her life coming from the beach.
>>
There is alwalys hentai for sex. np
>>
>>138296453
Most anime series have terrible storytelling, so yeah, working relationships into a narrative is not their strong suit.
>>
why don't you fuck off

Pretty much this
