I'm looking forward to the dvd release. I caught this way back when TCM did the special month of movies and fell in love with it even though it was only subbed.
Will be nice to see it again now that I'm probably 10 or so years older.

I would if I lived in America. I want to hear 10 year olds talking about their periods. Reading it in subtitles doesn't have the same effect. I'm not against subs and have watched it with subs, but some things need to be heard in your language, like 10 year olds talking about periods.

I dunno I only saw the trailer, apparently they have the chick from the new Star Wars movie playing Taeko.

The only Ghibli movie to actually make me fall asleep.

The creepy still shots of the farmers' faces when she went to the countryside still make me crack up. During my 20 years of watching anime, that was literally the first and only time where I thought, "Holy shit. That looks ugly as fuck."

I understand what this movie tried to be. And it ended up being an embarrassing comedy, instead.

The country scenes were pretty dull, especially the scene where he's driving her to the farm and they're just talking about random shit we never got to see. It just went on and on and on. It literally felt like half of the films run-time (60 minutes) were in that scene alone. I'm told that's what he was going for, but trying to bore your audience isn't really a good cinema technique.

There doesn't have to be action, but watching two people talk about random bullshit for an extended period of time while they drive from Vladivostok to London in real time is a bit much, even for a drama film.

Yes. If they showed Totoro first, people walked out during Fireflies, and if they showed Fireflies first, people were cheered up by Totoro. Once this became apparent, I presume they showed Fireflies first for the remainder of the screenings.

It was boring to me too but I do see that some people enjoy the mundane aspects of story telling. I think in maybe 30 more years when I'm old, I'll enjoy watching people talking about boring shit.
