I wanted to start getting into this manga for the hell of it - got 12 volumes in - but I started reading on dynamiteglove that *prime Ippo* couldn't beat Takamura from chapter 1, and it seemed to be pretty universally agreed upon.

What the fuck is that shit? Is Ippo just forever getting marginally better after taking severe brain damage in every match to beat up pussies in the featherweight category? That seemed to be the gist of it from what I've read. And what's with the nonsensical Dempsey Roll shit?

Ippo gets better and better but the way they fight is really arbitrary, Miyata can actually punch faster than sound, and Ippo ended a fight in a single hit.

Maybe, but it'd be because he'd be fucking starved and dehydrated. Takamura is still a lot better than ippo in technique, instinct and versatility, not just size and power.
